President Vladimir Putin told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday that Moscow cannot support the dire situation of Gazan civilians.

According to the state-run TASS news agency, a phone conversation between the two men focused on “the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.” The Israeli military response to the Hamas’ Operation Al-Aqsa Flood cannot lead “to such dire consequences for the civilian population,” Putin said according to a statement from the Kremlin carried by the agency.

The Russian readout said that Moscow is “ready to provide all possible assistance in order to alleviate the suffering of civilians and de-escalate the conflict” and that both Russia and Israel are looking to continue to “cooperate” on both evacuating Russians from Gaza and freeing Israelis held in Gaza.

For his part, Netanyahu expressed his dissatisfaction with the anti-Israel stance on the war, a statement by the Israeli PM’s office read.

Netanyahu voiced “resolute criticism of the cooperation between Russia and Iran,” the statement added.
