TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry voiced Tehran’s support for the peaceful resolution of border conflicts between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Armenia through mutual respect for the territorial integrity of the two neighbors. - Politics news - Asked by reporters about a recent deal between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Armenia on a series of border disputes, Nasser Kanaani said, “We respect the agreements between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia at the meeting of the border demarcation commission between the two countries.”He also called on both sides to continue efforts to resolve the border disputes through peaceful methods within the framework of mutual respect for each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in order to establish sustainable peace and stability in the South Caucasus region.Yerevan and Baku have reached an agreement on the resumption of border demarcation talks after Armenia agreed to return several villages to Azerbaijan in what both countries say is an important milestone as they edge towards a peace deal after fighting two wars since the collapse of the Soviet Union.Armenia is going to return to Azerbaijan the villages of Baghanis Ayrum, Asagi Eskipara, Heyrimli and Kizilhacili, all of which it occupied during the First Karabakh War of 1988-1994.The Azerbaijan Republic has been demanding the return of the villages as a condition for a peace deal after more than three decades of conflict, mostly centered on the region of Nagorno-Karabakh.In September 2023, Azeri forces staged a lightning offensive to regain control of Nagorno-Karabakh, where ethnic Armenians had enjoyed de facto independence since the mid-1990s.

Virtually the entire population of 100,000 people fled to Armenia within days.
