Zelensky Proposes Renewed Peace Talks with Moscow
Zelensky pushes for faster diplomacy and a face-to-face meeting with Putin after Russia’s latest strikes across Ukraine
Ukraine, PUREWILAYAH.COM - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Saturday that Kyiv has offered Moscow a fresh round of peace talks “next week,” only hours after Russian air-raids hit targets across the country.
During his nightly address, Zelensky said that National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov had formally invited the Russian delegation to reconvene, stressing that “the momentum of the negotiations must be stepped up.”
Previous rounds in Istanbul produced no ceasefire, yielding only large-scale prisoner exchanges and agreements on repatriating fallen soldiers. Zelensky argued that a renewed effort is crucial to “truly ensure lasting peace.”
Key Sticking Points and International Pressure
Last month’s session ended in stalemate after Russia demanded that Kyiv cede further territory and renounce all Western military backing—terms Ukrainian envoys dismissed as unacceptable. Ukrainian officials have since questioned the value of additional talks unless Moscow signals greater flexibility.
The Kremlin recently hinted at openness to continued dialogue after U.S. President Donald Trump warned Russia it had “50 days” to reach a settlement or face new sanctions, while promising expanded NATO-supported military aid to Ukraine if hostilities persist. Against this backdrop, Zelensky again called for a direct meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying leadership-level talks are essential to break the deadlock. (PW)
