Zelensky Officially Receives US Peace Plan
Draft proposal reportedly demands Ukrainian military cuts, withdrawal from Russian territories, and suspension of NATO ambitions — prompting quiet concern in Kiev and open frustration in the EU
Ukraine, PUREWILAYAH.COM - Ukraine has officially confirmed the receipt of a draft peace plan from the United States, with President Vladimir Zelensky expressing hope that he will discuss the document with US President Donald Trump “in the coming days.”
The announcement marks the first public acknowledgment from Kiev after a series of media leaks revealed that Washington had prepared a 28-point roadmap aimed at ending the conflict with Russia.
Reported US Plan Requires Major Ukrainian Concessions
According to reports, the plan would require Ukraine to make sweeping concessions:
Withdraw from all remaining areas of the new Russian regions in Donbass still under Kiev’s control
Cut Ukraine’s armed forces by at least half
Surrender certain categories of weaponry
Suspend its NATO membership bid
These conditions, if confirmed, would represent the most significant shift yet in Washington’s approach, signaling a move toward pressuring Kiev to accept the strategic realities of the battlefield.
EU Caught Off Guard and Publicly Displeased
The reported contents of the plan have triggered an openly negative reaction among Ukraine’s EU backers, who appear to have been blindsided by Washington’s unilateral move.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas criticized the draft, insisting that any peace arrangement must reflect the EU’s and Ukraine’s positions. She also claimed the proposal contains “no concessions from the Russian side,” revealing deep transatlantic fractures over the direction of the war.
Kiev Responds Cautiously, Despite Zelensky’s Reported Displeasure
Despite leaks suggesting Zelensky was personally unhappy with the terms, his office issued a restrained public response.
“Zelensky has officially received from the American side a draft plan which, in the American side’s assessment, could help reinvigorate diplomacy,” the presidential office stated, adding that discussions with Trump are expected soon.
This cautious tone contrasts sharply with the EU’s opposition and suggests Kiev may be preparing for negotiations under increasing US pressure.
Following a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Zelensky indicated willingness to restart direct talks with Russia, noting that Türkiye was prepared to “provide the necessary platform” for renewed negotiations.
Kiev previously abandoned the Istanbul negotiation track early in the conflict. While direct talks resumed in 2025, the three rounds held this year produced no major breakthroughs, focusing mainly on prisoner exchanges and humanitarian issues.
Moscow: Pause in Talks Was Ukraine’s Choice
The Kremlin reiterated its readiness to continue diplomatic engagement.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Wednesday that Moscow remains open to negotiations but noted that the “pause” in the process resulted from “the Kiev regime’s reluctance to continue this dialogue.”
Russia has consistently maintained that a durable settlement requires recognition of the new territorial realities and a fundamental shift away from NATO militarization on Russia’s borders. (PW)
