Yemen Slams Sanctions Renewal: UNSC Serves Western Interests, Not Justice
The Council has effectively “turned into a platform for the distribution of Western interests, where human rights are defined as Western human rights, and global interests are reduced to Washington’s
Yemen, PUREWILAYAH.COM - Member of the Political Bureau of Ansar Allah, Mohammed Al-Farrah, warned of the persistent double standards practiced by the UN Security Council in its handling of regional issues, particularly the aggression on Gaza and the Yemen file.
In statements on Saturday evening, Al-Farrah said that “the Security Council continues to present the worst model of double standards after spending years ignoring the genocide in Gaza and supporting the enemy.”
He added that the Council has effectively “turned into a platform for the distribution of Western interests, where human rights are defined as Western human rights, and global interests are reduced to Washington’s alone.”
He praised Russia and China for abstaining from voting on the resolution to renew sanctions on Yemen.
Western Powers Accused of Backing Israel While Targeting Yemen
Al-Farrah pointed out that “the West and America support the Israeli enemy with weapons and money, while imposing sanctions on Yemen in service of Zionist objectives.”
He reiterated Yemen’s firm stance in support of Gaza, adding that Yemen “will continue resisting American and Western hegemony over the peoples and countries of our region.”
Concluding his remarks, Al-Farrah affirmed that Yemen “will respond in kind to anyone who attacks the interests of our Yemeni people or seeks to harm its sovereignty and national decision.”
UNSC Extends Sanctions on Yemen Under Western Pressure
On November 14, the UN Security Council approved a new resolution extending financial sanctions and a travel ban on Yemen for another year, until November 14, 2026. The mandate of the panel of experts overseeing the sanctions regime was also extended until December 15, 2026.
The resolution was adopted by a 13-member majority, with Russia and China abstaining — a clear indication of growing international discomfort with the Council’s politicized approach.
This decision renews the sanctions originally imposed under Resolution 2140, maintaining frozen assets and travel restrictions on designated individuals and entities. The measures continue to be enforced under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, driven largely by U.S. pressure and Western political agendas rather than genuine concern for Yemen’s stability or sovereignty.
The sanctions framework — introduced in 2014 through Resolution 2140 and expanded in 2015 through Resolution 2216 — has long been criticized for serving geopolitical interests instead of contributing to peace. For years, these resolutions have been used to impose financial and political restrictions on Yemen while ignoring the devastating humanitarian and military aggression waged against the country.
