Xi Urges SCO to Resist Western Hegemony
Xi emphasized that the bloc must remain united in resisting the dominance of Western powers that seek to impose unilateral agendas on the world.
China, PUREWILAYAH.COM — President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China has called on members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization to stand firm against “hegemonism and power politics” in order to build a fairer, more balanced international order.
Speaking on Monday at the leaders’ summit in Tianjin, Xi emphasized that the bloc must remain united in resisting the dominance of Western powers that seek to impose unilateral agendas on the world.
Delivering a keynote speech to leaders and representatives from member and partner nations, Xi invoked the founding principles of the “Shanghai spirit” — mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, consultation, respect for diverse civilizations, and the pursuit of shared development.
He said that the organization must “oppose the Cold War mentality, bloc confrontation, and bullying practices” — terms widely understood to be Beijing’s direct criticism of the United States and its allies.
“We should advocate an equal and orderly multipolar world and a universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization, and make the global governance system more just and equitable,” Xi declared.
Economic Strength and Expanding Global Influence
Xi praised the achievements of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization since its establishment in 2001, highlighting that the bloc’s combined economic output has reached thirty trillion United States dollars.
He noted that the global influence of the organization is expanding in proportion to its economic strength.
China’s cumulative trade with fellow Shanghai Cooperation Organization nations has now exceeded 2.3 trillion United States dollars, Xi said, crediting joint projects under the Belt and Road Initiative and other cooperative mechanisms.
He pledged additional Chinese investment, particularly in education, scientific research, and the development of engineering skills necessary for sustainable growth.
The Chinese leader also stressed that member states are increasingly coordinating efforts to tackle common challenges such as regional security, environmental protection, and technological innovation.
Unity, Respect for Sovereignty, and Strategic Cooperation
Xi called for “win-win cooperation” that respects the sovereignty and national differences of member states, while also fostering stronger cultural and people-to-people exchanges.
He urged the Shanghai Cooperation Organization to improve the efficiency of its decision-making processes and to adopt policies grounded in evidence and practical outcomes.
More than twenty countries from Asia, Europe, and the Middle East are participating in the Chinese-hosted summit, along with representatives from major international bodies such as the United Nations and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Xi underscored that their collective voice, if united, could serve as a powerful counterbalance to Western-dominated institutions and narratives.
“The Shanghai Cooperation Organization must not waver in opposing hegemonism,” Xi said. “We have the collective strength to shape a new world order that is just, equitable, and beneficial to all — free from the coercion and exploitation that have long characterized Western dominance.” (PW)
