Venezuela Denounces US Blockade on Cuba at UN
Ambassador Moncada Condemns “Economic Warfare” and Collective Punishment Against a Sovereign Nation
Venezuela, PUREWILAYAH.COM — Venezuela has denounced the decades-long United States economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed on Cuba, describing it as a sustained act of aggression against a sovereign and independent nation.
Speaking before the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Tuesday, Venezuelan Ambassador Samuel Moncada called on the international community to demand an immediate end to what he termed an “illegal policy of economic warfare.”
Moncada Demands an End to US Sanctions on Cuba
Addressing the General Assembly on the eve of the vote on the annual resolution titled “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba,” Moncada said the blockade represents “an act of economic warfare that seeks to subdue an entire people through hunger, disease, and death.”
He warned that Washington’s characterization of the blockade as a “policy” was a deception, arguing that it violates international law and constitutes collective punishment.
According to Moncada, the US blockade inflicted more than $7.5 billion in damages to Cuba in the past year alone, devastating essential sectors including health, education, energy, and food.
The ambassador emphasized that such coercive measures are part of a broader US strategy aimed at maintaining hegemony in Latin America and suppressing the sovereignty of independent nations.
Cuba’s Medical Diplomacy vs. US Coercive Strategy
Moncada condemned ongoing US-led disinformation campaigns targeting Cuban medical cooperation programs, as well as threats made to Caribbean and African nations to prevent them from accepting Cuban medical assistance.
“While some countries send bombs and weapons, Cuba sends health workers,” he said, highlighting the moral contrast between Cuba’s humanitarian outreach and US foreign policy.
“Cuba sends doctors, and that is why it is attacked — because its example exposes the hypocrisy of those who claim to defend freedom while they blockade nations and support the genocide of entire peoples,” he added.
Venezuela Also Targeted by US Aggression
The Venezuelan envoy noted that his own country has been subjected to similar unilateral coercive measures designed to destabilize sovereign governments and impose foreign domination.
Moncada rejected US attempts to link Cuba to the conflict in Ukraine, calling such claims “fabrications from the State Department’s media laboratories.”
He further condemned the inclusion of Cuba on Washington’s so-called list of “State Sponsors of Terrorism,” describing the designation as “an insult to truth and history.”
“Cuba does not sponsor terrorism — it has suffered from it firsthand, through attacks, sabotage, and aggressions organized from US territory,” Moncada stated.
Violation of the CELAC “Zone of Peace”
Concluding his address, the ambassador warned that US foreign policy directly undermines the “Zone of Peace” declaration adopted by the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), which affirms the region’s commitment to non-intervention and peaceful coexistence.
Moncada urged UN member states to uphold the principles of international law, solidarity, and mutual respect by supporting Cuba’s right to sovereignty and development free from coercion and blockade. (PW)
