TEHRAN / GENEVA – The United States has formally withdrawn its membership from the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), a move executed just one day after a UN-backed fact-finding mission published a damning report concluding that US forces have committed war crimes against Iranian civilians.
The US State Department announced its departure during the council’s 63rd regular session in Geneva. Washington justified the withdrawal by accusing the Geneva-based body of promoting “anti-American rhetoric” and adopting an overly accommodating stance toward governments it claims are repressive. However, the timing of the exit coincides directly with the UN exposing American atrocities committed during its ongoing terrorist war on Iran, which began on February 28, 2026.
The Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran released a comprehensive report detailing two separate, indiscriminate US strikes on civilian infrastructure that constitute clear violations of international humanitarian law.
The first incident investigated by the UN mission was a devastating Tomahawk missile strike on the Shajareh Tayyebeh Primary School in the southern city of Minab. The attack killed over 160 people, including approximately 120 children. According to investigators, the school was a clearly identifiable civilian facility featuring child-oriented murals, playgrounds, and distinct educational signage. The mission found no evidence that the site was being used for military purposes, concluding that the US military failed to take feasible measures to verify the target before launching the strike.
A second atrocity detailed in the report occurred in the city of Lamerd, Fars province, where US forces targeted a sports complex and adjacent residential areas. The precision strike dispersed tungsten pellets across the neighbourhood, killing 22 civilians.
While US Central Command (CENTCOM) has denied involvement in the Lamerd strike, independent weapons experts and organisations such as Airwars have conclusively linked the destruction to the US-made Precision Strike Missile (PrSM). Analysis of verified footage and blast patterns confirmed the use of the Lockheed Martin-manufactured weapon, which the US military recently admitted was being tested in combat for the first time in Iran. The UN report noted that Washington acted with full awareness of the substantial risk to civilian lives, describing the conduct as going beyond mere negligence.
The White House and State Department have outright rejected the UNHRC’s findings, dismissing the independent investigators’ credibility.
By abandoning the UN Human Rights Council, the American regime has once again demonstrated its long-standing contempt for international law and global oversight, choosing instead to flee international forums when faced with accountability for its own war crimes and human rights violations. Washington had previously ordered its withdrawal from several other UN bodies and has stated it will not seek future membership on the council.
