US ‘Banditry’ in Venezuela Signals Return to Global Chaos: Moscow
Russian envoy tells UN Security Council that Washington’s abduction of President Maduro exposes a neo-colonial world order built on force, plunder, and impunity
UNITED NATIONS | PUREWILAYAH.COM — Russia has issued a stark warning that the United States’ abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro marks a dangerous turning point for the international system, threatening to drag the world back into an era of “chaos and injustice.”
Speaking at an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council on Monday, Russia’s ambassador to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, condemned Washington’s actions as nothing less than “international banditry,” warning that they reveal the true nature of the global order the US seeks to impose.
Nebenzia stated that the US military raid on Venezuela demonstrates a model of world order based on raw force, lawlessness, and hegemonic ambition, adding that the operation “horrifies even the staunchest Atlanticists.”
“The United States has shown the world what kind of order it intends to build,” he told the Council, describing the assault as a blatant violation of sovereignty carried out with complete disregard for international law.
Abduction of a Sitting President
On Saturday, US forces attacked the oil-rich South American nation, abducting President Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores, transferring them to a US warship before flying them to New York.
The Venezuelan president appeared in a US court on Monday on charges of drug-trafficking conspiracy, declaring, “I am a decent man!” before entering a plea of not guilty.
Maduro has long warned that Washington’s hostility toward Venezuela is driven by its desire to seize control of the country’s vast natural resources.
Those warnings were reinforced on Sunday when US President Donald Trump openly stated that Washington intends to “run” Venezuela so that the United States can “take advantage of the economics of what they have.”
Russia Condemns US ‘Aggression’
Nebenzia denounced the operation as a manifestation of US hegemonistic ambitions in Latin America, arguing that Washington’s pursuit of unlimited control over natural resources is fueling a resurgence of neo-colonialism and imperialism.
According to the Russian envoy, tolerating such behavior would mean normalizing the violation of international law and abandoning even the most basic standards of civilized conduct in global affairs.
“The bell is already tolling,” Nebenzia warned, not only for individual UN member states, but for the future credibility of the United Nations itself.
Russia, alongside other BRICS nations, has categorically condemned the US actions, demanding Maduro’s immediate release and reaffirming solidarity with the Venezuelan people.
Moscow has urged the international community to unite in rejecting Washington’s belligerent foreign policy, warning that silence or neutrality in the face of such acts amounts to complicity.
Western Silence and EU Evasion
In contrast, reactions from Western capitals have been notably muted.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas merely called for “restraint” and adherence to the UN Charter. A subsequent joint EU statement—signed by all member states except Hungary—neither condemned nor endorsed the US abduction, reflecting deep reluctance to confront Washington.
For Moscow and its allies, the message is unmistakable: the United States is asserting a precedent in which sovereign leaders can be seized by force, legal justifications fabricated after the fact, and international norms discarded whenever they obstruct American strategic and economic ambitions.
As Nebenzia warned the Security Council, ignoring this moment does not preserve stability—it accelerates the collapse of the international order itself. (PW)
