The mask of the so-called “rules-based international order” has not just slipped; it has been entirely shattered in occupied Al-Quds.
On Tuesday, August 25, 2026, the world witnessed a blatant act of institutional theft and state-sponsored terrorism as Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) forcibly raided and evicted the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) from its historic vocational training centre in the Qalandia area.
Backed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and led by the apartheid regime’s extremist Police Minister, Itamar Ben Gvir, the operation was not merely a bureaucratic enforcement of a ban. It was a theatrical, militarised assault on the very concept of Palestinian refugee rights—and a glaring expose of the absolute impotence of the United Nations.
The Storming of Qalandia
At approximately 10:00 AM local time, the Qalandia Training Centre—situated between the Kafr Aqab neighbourhood and the Qalandia refugee camp—was placed under siege. According to reports from the ground, at least four armoured vehicles and more than 50 IOF personnel descended upon the United Nations facility.
The occupation forces moved aggressively through the compound, forcibly evacuating the 20 UNRWA staff members present and establishing a tight military cordon. A convoy of civilian vehicles was later seen fleeing the facility under heavy military escort, marking the physical seizure of a UN mandate on sovereign Palestinian land.
This was no isolated incident. Ben Gvir, flanked by occupation troops, subsequently stormed the nearby Qalandia Vocational Training Institute, announcing the commencement of wider “evacuation operations” targeting UNRWA facilities in Kafr Aqab.
“UNRWA in Our Hands”: The Face of Zionist Impunity
What makes this latest escalation particularly grotesque is the triumphalism of the Zionist leadership. Not content with merely executing the raid, Itamar Ben Gvir utilised the seizure of a UN facility as a propaganda stunt.
Shortly after the IOF secured the perimeter, Ben Gvir celebrated the operation, explicitly stating that his forces were implementing legislation designed to strip UNRWA of its presence. In a move dripping with colonial arrogance, he published an image of the Zionist flag hoisted above the entrance of the UN training centre, captioned with a chilling declaration:
“UNRWA in our hands.”
This is the reality of the Zionist entity in 2026. They do not just violate international law; they broadcast their violations as victories. The legislation in question, which took effect in January 2025, severs ties with UNRWA and bans the agency from operating in territories controlled by the occupation. The ultimate goal? The total liquidation of the Palestinian refugee file.
Why Target a Vocational Centre?
To the uninitiated, the obsession with a vocational training centre established in 1952 might seem disproportionate. The Qalandia centre provides education and trade skills to roughly 340 Palestinians from the occupied West Bank annually. Why would an entire military apparatus mobilise to shut down a school?
Because UNRWA is not just an aid organisation; it is the living, breathing institutional embodiment of the Palestinian Right of Return.
Since its inception following the Nakba, UNRWA has been the primary custodian of the demographic reality of the Palestinian refugees. By defining who a refugee is, and by providing generational services to them, UNRWA stands as a massive obstacle to the Zionist project of historical erasure. The occupation’s campaign to delegitimise, defund, and now physically dismantle UNRWA is a desperate attempt to declare the refugee issue “dead” by force.
As UNRWA warned earlier this month, the illegal closure and seizure of the Qalandia college deprives thousands of refugees of vital services provided under a direct mandate from the UN General Assembly. It is a collective punishment designed to break the socio-economic backbone of the camps.
The Toothless Condemnations of a Broken UN
How did the “international community” respond to armed soldiers storming a UN facility, cutting its locks, and hoisting a foreign flag over its doors?
UNRWA issued a statement declaring that it “unequivocally condemns this unauthorised and deeply concerning incursion,” adding that the “entry of armed occupation forces into a United Nations facility... is unacceptable.”
But to an apartheid regime backed unconditionally by Western imperial powers, words like “unacceptable” mean absolutely nothing. The United Nations has been reduced to a spectator in its own house, issuing strongly worded press releases while its facilities are occupied and its staff are terrorised. The UN’s failure to invoke any meaningful consequences for the Zionist entity proves, once again, that the international legal architecture is entirely hollow when applied to Palestine.
The Illusion of Erasure
The Zionist regime operates under a fatal delusion. Netanyahu, Ben Gvir, and their Western backers believe that by shuttering a 70-year-old building, raiding a classroom in Kafr Aqab, or passing a Knesset law, they can erase the memory of the Nakba.
They cannot.
The Right of Return is not housed within the walls of the Qalandia Vocational Training Institute. It is etched into the rusted keys kept in Palestinian living rooms across the diaspora. It is memorised in the maps drawn by children in the refugee camps. It is alive in the unwavering sumud (steadfastness) of a people who have survived decades of ethnic cleansing, blockade, and genocide.
Ben Gvir may have raised his flag over an empty UN building, declaring “UNRWA in our hands.” But Palestine is not in his hands. And as long as the Resistance endures, the Right of Return never will be.
