UN to Hold Emergency Session After Israeli Strikes on Doha
Pakistan and Algeria push for urgent Security Council debate over blatant breach of Qatar’s sovereignty
Palestine, PUREWILAYAH.COM - The United Nations Security Council will hold an emergency session in New York to address Israel’s recent airstrikes targeting Hamas officials in the Qatari capital, Doha.
The meeting, requested by Pakistan and Algeria, is scheduled for Wednesday at 10:00 p.m. al-Quds time (7:00 p.m. GMT).
The South Korean mission, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the Council for September, confirmed that the discussion will cover the broader “Middle East situation,” with specific attention to Israel’s attack on Qatari soil.
The joint request underscores mounting outrage among Muslim-majority nations and Global South states over Israel’s escalating pattern of cross-border aggression, with both countries stressing the urgent need for international accountability.
Hamas: ‘A Treacherous Assassination Attempt’
In an official statement, Hamas condemned the strike as a “heinous crime” and a “flagrant violation of all international norms and laws,” describing it as a direct assault on Qatar’s sovereignty.
“The treacherous attempt by the Zionist occupation to assassinate the Hamas negotiating delegation in Doha today is a heinous crime, a blatant act of aggression, and a flagrant violation of all international norms and laws,” the statement read.
Hamas emphasized that Qatar, along with Egypt, has played a critical role in mediating efforts to halt the aggression, broker a ceasefire, and secure a prisoner exchange.
The movement confirmed that while its top leadership survived, several members of the delegation and security personnel were killed: Jihad Lubad, office director for senior leader Khalil al-Hayya, and al-Hayya’s son Hammam; along with Abdullah Abdel Wahed, Mo’men Hassouna, Ahmad al-Mamlouk, and Qatari security officer Badr Saad al-Humaidi.
Hamas Accuses US of Complicity
Hamas linked the attack directly to ongoing negotiations, pointing out that the delegation was targeted “at the very moment” it was discussing a proposal from US President Donald Trump.
“This confirms beyond any doubt that Netanyahu and his government do not want to reach any agreement,” Hamas said, adding that the Israeli leadership is working to sabotage all peace efforts, regardless of their own captives, regional stability, or international law.
The group held Washington “jointly responsible” for the attack, citing the US’s “constant support” for Israeli aggression against Palestinians.
Evidence of US–Israel Coordination
Israeli media outlets disclosed details of close coordination between Tel Aviv and Washington in the lead-up to the strike.
Channel 13 quoted a senior Israeli official confirming that the operation was carried out in coordination with the United States.
According to Channel 14, the coordination included at least two high-level meetings in recent days:
A meeting between US Central Command chief Gen. Brad Cooper and Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, followed by daily — sometimes twice-daily — communications.
A subsequent meeting between Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer and US envoy Steve Witkoff within 24 hours of the strike.
These revelations further highlight the depth of joint military planning between the two allies. (PW)
