UN Experts Warn of a ‘Silent Gaza’ in Cuba as US Blockade Strangles the Island
As Washington weaponises fuel and food to crush a sovereign nation, human rights experts condemn the US for deliberately depriving millions of Cubans of the means to survive.
United Nations human rights experts have issued a stark condemnation of the United States’ relentless economic warfare against Cuba, warning that Washington’s suffocating blockade is engineering a “silent Gaza” on the sovereign Caribbean island.
In a powerful statement on Thursday, the UN experts denounced the recent escalation of US sanctions, calling on the international community to intervene before the imperialist siege pushes the Cuban people into a catastrophic humanitarian abyss.
“Food Must Never Be Used as a Weapon”
Drawing a chilling parallel to the genocidal siege on the Gaza Strip, the experts highlighted the cruelty of US policies that deliberately target civilian infrastructure and basic human needs.
“Food must never be used as an instrument of political pressure,” the experts declared. “Measures that knowingly deprive a population of the means to survive strike at the most basic guarantees of the rights to life and diminish the core of human dignity.”
The statement exposes the true nature of the US blockade: not a mere political dispute, but a calculated campaign of collective punishment designed to starve and exhaust the Cuban people into submission.
Washington’s Escalating Economic Terrorism
The warning comes as the Trump administration aggressively ramps up pressure on Havana. In January, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order authorising heavy tariffs on imports from any country that dares to supply oil to Cuba. Furthermore, the administration declared a fabricated “state of emergency,” falsely branding the sovereign Cuban government as a threat to US national security.
These draconian measures have severely strained Cuba’s fuel supply, creating a ripple effect that cripples electricity generation, transportation, food production, healthcare, and education across the island.
Plunging the Island into Darkness
The tangible impact of this economic terrorism was felt brutally over the weekend when five of Cuba’s 15 provinces were plunged into total darkness following a partial collapse of the national power grid.
The state-run electricity company, Unión Eléctrica de Cuba (UNE), reported that the system failure occurred at 6:07 pm local time, cutting off power to Havana and large swaths of western Cuba.
Authorities note that the US-imposed fuel blockade has severely weakened the national grid, stripping the island of the diesel required to run emergency generators and maintain critical services for its citizens.
A Call for Global Solidarity
While Washington attempts to use darkness and hunger to break the spirit of the Cuban Revolution, the island continues to stand as a beacon of resistance against US hegemony in the Western Hemisphere. The UN experts’ warning serves as a glaring indictment of American hypocrisy—a superpower that lectures the world on human rights while actively orchestrating a slow-motion humanitarian crisis to punish a nation that simply refuses to bow.
