WASHINGTON — In a blatant display of authoritarianism and political desperation, the Trump administration has launched a concerted effort to revoke the US citizenship of Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar and deport her from the country just weeks before the November 3 midterm elections.
According to establishment media reports, Homeland Security agents executed a court-approved, early-morning raid on Omar’s residence. Agents confiscated her passport, mobile phones, computers, and notebooks, escalating a political witch hunt based on the flimsy pretext that her age was allegedly misstated on her 2000 naturalisation application.
Federal investigators had previously examined these exact claims during the Biden administration, abandoning the probe entirely after finding absolutely no evidence of fraud. Yet, under the current regime, prosecutors are reviving the baseless allegations to eliminate a prominent Muslim-American lawmaker who has consistently opposed US imperialism and the Zionist entity.
Adding to the persecution, Washington’s top federal prosecutor, Jeanine Pirro, has initiated a parallel probe into Omar’s financial disclosures. This aggressive move completely disregards a nonpartisan congressional ethics panel that previously cleared the congresswoman of any wrongdoing. Meanwhile, investigators have summoned Omar’s relatives to testify before a grand jury in Minnesota, weaponising a localised welfare-fraud scandal to smear the Somali-American community and justify a broader campaign of harassment.
Omar’s office has vehemently condemned the manoeuvre, exposing it for what it is: a desperate attempt by the Trump regime to silence one of the most effective progressive and anti-war voices in the US Congress. “There is no basis for this,” her office stated, highlighting that the President would love nothing more than to eliminate his political opponents.
The timing of this domestic crackdown is no coincidence. It arrives as the Trump administration faces severe domestic backlash over its imperialist war on Iran. Public opinion is turning sharply against the military aggression, with Republican approval of the war plummeting from 73 percent in March to just 60 percent today. Remarkably, three out of four US citizens now acknowledge that the war has not been worth its exorbitant human and economic cost.
With fuel prices soaring and his base growing restless over the failing foreign policy, regime insiders have admitted that Trump plans to delay the resumption of bombing campaigns against Iran until after the midterm vote. Unable to deliver victories abroad or stabilise the economy at home, the Trump regime has resorted to targeting domestic dissenters and scapegoating minorities to appease the far-right, anti-Muslim factions of his political coalition.
The persecution of Ilhan Omar serves as a stark reminder of the increasingly fascist nature of the US political establishment, which will stop at nothing to suppress dissent and maintain its hegemonic ambitions in West Asia.
