Trump Disinvites Canada From His ‘Peace Board’ After Clash With Prime Minister
US president rescinds invitation to Mark Carney following public dispute over trade, sovereignty, and Washington’s global posture
United States | PUREWILAYAH.COM - US President Donald Trump has withdrawn an invitation to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to join his self-declared “Board of Peace,” reversing an earlier decision after a public clash between the two leaders.
The withdrawal comes amid rising tensions between Washington and Ottawa over trade policy, tariffs, and US statements challenging Canadian sovereignty.
Board of Peace and International Pushback
Trump had invited dozens of heads of state to participate in the Board of Peace, a body he established with the stated aim of addressing global conflicts. The board was initially presented as part of a UN-backed framework linked to governance and reconstruction efforts in Gaza following a proposed peace arrangement involving Hamas and Israel.
Several countries declined to participate, citing concerns that the board’s mandate would overlap with or undermine the authority of the United Nations and existing international mechanisms.
Despite the initial outreach, participation in the board has since been shaped by political developments and bilateral relations with Washington.
Trump’s Public Rebuke and Withdrawal of Invitation
The decision to exclude Canada followed a series of public exchanges between Trump and Carney over US tariffs and Trump’s repeated assertion that Canada should become the “51st state” of the United States.
In a message posted on Truth Social on Thursday, Trump announced the withdrawal of the invitation, writing:
“Dear Prime Minister Carney: Please let this Letter serve to represent that the Board of Peace is withdrawing its invitation to you regarding Canada’s joining what will be the most prestigious Board of Leaders ever assembled, at any time.”
The statement formally ended Canada’s prospective participation in the initiative.
Davos Exchange Highlights Growing Rift
Speaking earlier at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump escalated his rhetoric toward Ottawa, stating that Canada “gets a lot of freebies” from the United States and claiming that the country “lives because of the United States.”
Carney responded on Thursday by rejecting the remarks, stating: “Canada doesn’t live because of the United States. Canada thrives because we are Canadian.” In an earlier address in Davos, Carney said the global order built on “American hegemony” is “in the midst of a rupture.” (PW)
