Trump Claims Meeting With Xi Will Open Path to ‘Everlasting Peace’
Washington offers limited tariff relief as China secures key concessions during APEC summit talks in South Korea
United States, PUREWILAYAH.COM - US President Donald Trump praised his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the APEC summit in Busan, South Korea, saying the talks would pave the way for “everlasting peace and success” between Washington and Beijing.
It was the first meeting between the two leaders in six years.
In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump described the talks as “a great one for both of our countries,” framing the negotiations as a turning point in the strained economic relationship.
Trade Measures and Temporary Suspension of Controls
Beijing announced that the two sides reached a consensus on addressing major trade issues.
China agreed to suspend its latest rare-earth export controls for one year while conducting long-term studies. The materials, critical for electronics and defense manufacturing, had been restricted after the US expanded limits on Chinese semiconductor access.
In return, Washington will reduce tariffs on Chinese goods from 57% to 47%, suspend investigations targeting China’s maritime and logistics sectors, and lower certain tariffs linked to fentanyl-related restrictions.
China also agreed to resume purchases of US soybeans and agricultural products following the recent trade standoff.
The decision comes as part of reciprocal adjustments, while most other trade restrictions between the two countries remain in place.
Long-Standing Tariff Dispute
Bilateral tensions escalated after the US imposed sweeping tariffs during Trump’s previous term. The new measures introduce partial reversals but maintain significant pressure on Chinese imports and industries.
Both sides signaled readiness to continue negotiations, with China stating that the agreement includes a path to resolving key trade concerns.
While Washington presented the agreement as a move toward stability, the commitments outlined reflect a measured retreat from previous US tariff escalation, balanced by temporary concessions from Beijing and continued restrictions on both sides. (PW)
