TP Night Three of Muharram Reflects on Witness, Loyalty, and the Road to Karbala
The third night of Truth Promoters’ Muharram 1448 series explored themes of covenant, witness, and moral responsibility through Quranic reflection, poetry, lecture, lamentation, and Ziyarat Ashura.
Muharram Program, PUREWILAYAH.COM - The third night of Truth Promoters’ Muharram 1448 program continued its exploration of shahada and witness through Quran recitation, poetic reflection, a lecture by Sheikh Shabbir Hassanally, maqtal narration, lamentation, and Ziyarat Ashura. The evening focused on questions of loyalty, sacrifice, and remaining faithful to truth in times of trial.
Quran and Poetic Reflection
The program opened with recitations from Surah Al-Ahzab (33:23) and Surah Ali Imran (3:169). The selected verses spoke of believers who remain true to their covenant with Allah and of those slain in His way who are alive with their Lord. Together, the passages established the evening’s themes of commitment, steadfastness, and faithfulness to divine promises.
The poetic reflection expanded on these themes by contemplating sacrifice, conviction, and conscious devotion. Referencing both historical and contemporary figures, the poem reflected on those who dedicate their lives to a sacred cause and emphasized the importance of understanding the path one chooses rather than merely following the crowd. The reflection concluded by questioning whether individuals have truly considered and chosen the convictions they claim to uphold.
Exploring Shahada and Moral Responsibility
In the main lecture, Sheikh Shabbir Hassanally explored the themes of shahada, witness, and moral responsibility through references to the writings of Martyr Murtadha Motahhari, the Quranic account of Habil (Abel), and the events of Karbala. The discussion examined the relationship between sacrifice, commitment, and remaining faithful to truth in the face of difficult choices.
The lecture also reflected on the significance of conscious decision-making in matters of faith and conviction. Drawing on historical and religious examples, it addressed how individuals respond when confronted with pressures that challenge their principles, beliefs, and responsibilities before God.
Referring to Karbala, the discussion presented Imam Husain’s (as) stand as a defining example of commitment to truth and refusal to legitimize falsehood. The events leading to Karbala were discussed within the broader context of witness, loyalty, and the enduring consequences of moral choice.
Maqtal and Lamentation
The maqtal segment revisited the events in Madinah following the death of Muawiyah and the rise of Yazid. Through a dramatic narration presented in the voice of Imam al-Mahdi (aj), the recitation focused on Imam Husain’s (as) refusal to pledge allegiance to Yazid and portrayed that decision as the beginning of the road to Karbala.
The narration described the pressure placed upon Imam Husain (as) to legitimize the new ruler, his rejection of that demand, and his subsequent departure from Madinah.
It also reflected on his farewell to the city of his grandfather, the Holy Prophet Muhammad (s), before embarking upon the journey that would ultimately lead to Karbala.
The evening’s noha, Spirit of Hussain, reflected on the sacrifices of Imam Husain (as), Ali Asghar (as), Abbas (as), Sayyida Zainab (sa), and the survivors of Karbala.
The recitation connected remembrance of Karbala with questions of loyalty, sacrifice, and personal responsibility, repeatedly asking where believers would stand when confronted by the same moral tests faced by the family of the Prophet (s).
Ziyarat Ashura
The program concluded with the recitation of Ziyarat Ashura. Participants sent salutations upon Imam Husain (as), his family, and his companions while reaffirming their attachment to the values associated with Karbala and its enduring message.
Coming after reflections on covenant, witness, and the refusal to legitimize falsehood, the Ziyarat served as a collective reaffirmation of loyalty to the path of Imam Husain (as) and the principles for which he stood.
The third night formed part of Truth Promoters’ ongoing ten-night Muharram series examining shahada, witness, and the legacy of Imam Husain (as) through the Quran, history, poetry, and devotional remembrance. (PW)
