TP Muharram Night 10: Ashura and the Eternal Witness
The final night of Truth Promoters’ Muharram 1448 program culminated in the tragedy of Ashura, presenting Imam Husain’s stand as the eternal measure of truth, sacrifice, and living witness.
Muharram Program, PUREWILAYAH.COM – The tenth and final night of Truth Promoters’ Muharram 1448 program brought the series to its culmination with the remembrance of Ashura, the day on which Imam Husain (as), his family, and his companions offered the ultimate testimony to Allah.
After nine nights exploring the meaning of shahada, loyalty, sacrifice, and truthful witness, the final gathering returned to the event from which every lesson had emerged: Karbala itself.
Through Quran recitation, poetic reflection, a lecture by Sheikh Shabbir Hassanally, maqtal narration, lamentation, and Ziyarat Ashura, participants reflected on Ashura not merely as a historical tragedy, but as the enduring criterion by which truth and falsehood continue to be measured.
Quran and Poetic Reflection
The evening opened with recitations from Surah al-Saffat (37:102–107), recounting Prophet Ibrahim’s (as) willingness to sacrifice his son before Allah replaced the offering with “a great sacrifice.” The selected verses introduced the central theme of the evening by presenting Karbala as the fulfillment of that prophetic legacy of submission.
The accompanying reflection, A Reflection on Shahada, traced the prophetic tradition of witness from the prophets to Imam Husain (as), describing every witness before Karbala as preparation and every witness after it as an echo. The reflection concluded that every true allegiance begins with refusal—”La ilaha” before “illa Allah”—framing Imam Husain’s stand against Yazid as the ultimate expression of tawhid in action.
Ashura and the Eternal Witness
In his concluding lecture, Sheikh Shabbir Hassanally presented Imam Husain (as) as the culmination of the prophetic tradition of witness. Revisiting the themes developed throughout the ten-night series, he argued that every lesson—from the story of Abel and the prophets to the theology of shahada—ultimately pointed toward Karbala, where witness reached its fullest expression.
Drawing on Ziyarat al-Warith, the lecture described Imam Husain as the heir of Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Prophet Muhammad (saw), inheriting and completing the witness embodied by each prophet. The Quranic account of Prophet Ibrahim’s sacrifice was likewise presented as finding its fulfillment in Ashura, where Imam Husain became the “great sacrifice” foreshadowed in Surah al-Saffat.
The lecture further presented Imam Husain as the Furqan—the divine criterion by which every claim of truth, justice, sacrifice, and authority is measured. That criterion, participants heard, applies not only to empires and oppression throughout history but also to every believer, who is called to reject every form of false allegiance before affirming loyalty to Allah alone.
The Master of Witnesses
The evening’s maqtal brought the series to its emotional climax by recounting the final moments of Imam Husain (as) on the Day of Ashura. Narrated through the voice of Imam al-Mahdi (aj), the recitation followed Imam Husain after every member of his family and companions had fallen, recalling his final address, his steadfast prayer amid battle, his last prostration, and the sacrifice through which Karbala became the eternal testimony of faith.
The narration concluded with Sayyidah Zaynab (as), whose response transformed the tragedy of Karbala into an offering accepted by Allah and, later, into her famous declaration before Ibn Ziyad: “I saw nothing but beauty.” Together, the recitation presented Ashura not as the end of witness, but as the beginning of its everlasting legacy.
Lamentation and Ziyarat Ashura
The evening’s reflection continued through the lamentation The Fount of Karbala, portraying Karbala as an ever-flowing source of faith whose witness continues through Palestine, Lebanon, and every place where oppression is resisted. Echoing the refrain, “For us each day is Ashura,” the noha affirmed that the legacy of Imam Husain remains alive wherever believers uphold truth and justice.
The program concluded with the recitation of Ziyarat Ashura, renewing the participants’ covenant with Imam Husain (as) through declarations of peace, loyalty, and steadfast commitment to the path of the Ahlulbayt (as). The recitation reaffirmed devotion to those who stood with truth at Karbala while praying to remain among those who uphold that witness and await the appearance of Imam al-Mahdi (aj).
Bringing together the Quran, poetry, lecture, maqtal, lamentation, and ziyarah, the final night concluded the Muharram series with a single message: Karbala is not merely an event remembered in history, but the enduring criterion through which every generation is called to distinguish truth from falsehood and renew its witness before Allah.
