Thousands Protest US Push to Take Greenland in ‘Hands Off Greenland’ Demonstrations
Mass rallies erupt across Denmark and Greenland as residents reject President Donald Trump’s attempt to seize the Arctic island, defending sovereignty, democracy, and human rights.
Greenland | PUREWILAYAH.COM — Massive demonstrations organized by Greenlandic associations erupted across Denmark and Greenland on Saturday, as thousands took to the streets to oppose United States President Donald Trump’s declared ambition to acquire Greenland.
The coordinated protests were held under the banner “Hands Off Greenland”, sending a unified message rejecting US interference and asserting Greenland’s sovereignty.
According to organizers, the demonstrations aim to defend Greenland’s democracy, self-determination, and fundamental human rights in the face of Washington’s pressure.

Greenland Is Not for Sale
In Copenhagen, thousands of demonstrators gathered at City Hall Square at noon local time, chanting “Greenland is not for sale” and carrying banners reading “Hands off Greenland.”
The crowd later marched toward the US Embassy, turning the protest into a direct challenge to Washington’s agenda.
Julie Rademacher, chair of Uagut, an association of Greenlanders living in Denmark, addressed the demonstrators:
“I am very grateful for the huge support we as Greenlanders receive. We are also sending a message to the world that you all must wake up.”
She stressed that Greenlanders had been forced into the global frontline of a struggle over democracy and human rights.
Parallel demonstrations were also reported in Aarhus, Aalborg, and Odense, indicating nationwide opposition within Denmark.
Nuuk Rallies Against “Illegal US Plans”
In Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, the protest began at 4:00 p.m. local time, with organizers explicitly stating that the demonstration was against the United States’ illegal plans to take control of Greenland.
Several thousand people joined the march, including Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen, who was seen waving a Greenlandic flag alongside protesters.
Participants chanted slogans, sang traditional Inuit songs, and marched through light rain toward the US consulate, carrying Greenlandic flags.
Make America Go Away
Many demonstrators wore caps reading “Make America Go Away,” a pointed rejection of Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan.
An AFP reporter on the ground noted the symbolic reversal as protesters openly rejected US political dominance and territorial ambition.
Greenland’s total population is approximately 57,000, underscoring the scale and intensity of the mobilization.
Clear Message to Washington
Organizers stated that the demonstrations were intended to send “a clear and unified message of respect for Greenland’s democracy and fundamental human rights.”
The protests reflect growing resistance across Greenlandic and Danish society against any attempt by the United States to impose control over the Arctic territory. (PW)
