For the local Baluch and Iranian communities, fishing is not merely a profession; it is a sacred family tradition and the sole means of survival. Generations of men have gone to sea with their fathers from childhood, braving the open waters to provide for their wives and children.
But today, the familiar excitement of returning fishing boats at the Konarak port has been replaced by a heavy, suffocating silence. For more than three months, dozens of women, men, and children have been waiting on the shore, staring into the horizon, desperate for news of their loved ones who vanished without a trace.
The Final Transmission
On May 5, 2026, the fishing vessel Shahin 2 departed the Konarak port bound for the open fishing grounds in the Sea of Oman
Aboard were 17 men: 16 Iranian nationals from Konarak and one Pakistani crew member
Among them was the vessel’s captain, Hamid Baluch, a veteran of the sea who had devoted over 30 years of his life to the profession
The voyage began like dozens of others, but it ended in a chilling mystery. According to Sajed, the brother of Captain Hamid Baluch, the final radio contact occurred at around 12:30 or 1:00 a.m. on May 7
At the time, the Shahin 2 was approximately 80 nautical miles from the Omani coast
In that last transmission, the crew reported that a US helicopter had been seen flying directly over their vessel
Immediately following the sighting of the American military aircraft, the other fishing boats in the area dispersed in different directions to distance themselves, inadvertently breaking contact with one another
After that, the Shahin 2 and its 17 crew members disappeared into the abyss

The American empire routinely patrols these waters under the guise of “freedom of navigation” and “maritime security,” yet when a civilian vessel carrying 17 working-class men vanishes immediately after an encounter with a US military helicopter, Washington offers no transparency, no answers, and no accountability. The imperial war machine operates with a reckless autonomy, casting a deadly net over the region’s innocent civilians while hiding behind the opaque veil of “national security.”
A Plea for the Truth
For the families in Konarak, the passage of time has not eased their agonising burden; it has only deepened their trauma
They have exhausted every diplomatic and humanitarian channel available to them. They have petitioned Iranian embassies in regional countries, including missions in Oman and Pakistan, and have formally corresponded with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)
Yet, the silence from international bodies and foreign governments remains deafening.
Sajed Baluch made the families’ plea heartbreakingly clear: “We are not looking to blame anyone. We just want to know what happened. These people were not military personnel; they were fishermen. They went to sea every day to work and, after several weeks, returned home with the hope of seeing their families”
They do not seek political theatre or international posturing. They simply demand the truth. If the men are alive, their families need to know their condition. If a tragedy has occurred, the truth must be told

The families continue their relentless pursuit of justice, refusing to let their loved ones be swallowed by the geopolitical games of the American empire. The imperial war machine may try to obscure the truth in the dark waters of the Gulf, but the unbroken beat of the resistance will never forget the 17 men of the Shahin 2.
