The Death Knell for US Sanctions: Iran Set to Join BRICS New Development Bank
Tehran accelerates de-dollarisation and bilateral monetary pacts, rendering Washington's economic warfare obsolete.
In a historic move that further accelerates the decline of US financial hegemony, Iran is set to officially join the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB). The announcement marks a major strategic victory for the Islamic Republic, effectively neutralising decades of Western economic warfare and cementing its place in the new multipolar economic order.
Speaking at the first meeting of BRICS finance ministers and central bank governors—hosted by India, which holds the bloc’s 2026 rotating chairmanship—Iranian Central Bank Governor Abdolnasser Hemmati confirmed Tehran’s imminent accession.
“The most important result of cooperation among BRICS member countries is the establishment of the New Development Bank, and our country will soon become a member of this bank,” Hemmati declared. He emphasised that Tehran is actively pursuing bilateral and trilateral monetary cooperation within the bloc to bypass Western financial chokepoints.
Building a Sanction-Proof Economy
Iran’s integration into the NDB is the culmination of a relentless, state-led push to dismantle the weaponised US dollar system. Sweeping Western sanctions, originally designed to isolate and suffocate the Iranian economy, have instead backfired spectacularly, forcing Tehran to become a global pioneer in building an alternative, sanction-proof financial architecture.
By aggressively trading in national currencies and linking domestic banking networks—such as the groundbreaking integration of Iranian and Russian financial messaging systems—the Islamic Republic is rendering US Treasury threats meaningless. Hemmati noted that member states are now fully capable of trading with one another in their own sovereign currencies, completely sidestepping the US dollar and the Euro.
A Counterweight to Western Institutions
Founded in 2015 by the original BRICS-5 (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa), the NDB was established as a direct counterweight to the US-dominated IMF and World Bank. It finances infrastructure and sustainable development projects across the Global South, entirely free from the punishing political conditionalities and neoliberal austerity measures imposed by Western institutions.
Iran, which officially joined the broader BRICS bloc in 2024, has long advocated for local-currency settlements and even proposed a unified BRICS currency to dethrone the petrodollar. Now, as a shareholder in the NDB alongside heavyweights like China, Russia, and the UAE, Tehran will have direct access to a massive pool of development capital that is completely insulated from Western coercion.
Strengthening Ties Across the Global South
During the summit, Hemmati praised India’s handling of the BRICS presidency, highlighting expanding cooperation between Tehran and New Delhi in the monetary, banking, and digital economy sectors. He described the summit as a vital opportunity to align with the states that make up Iran’s widest and most crucial monetary exchanges.
As the Global South continues to consolidate its economic independence, Iran’s entry into the NDB serves as a glaring warning to Washington and its European vassals: the era of US dollar imperialism, unilateral sanctions, and Western financial dictatorship is rapidly coming to an end.
