Syria to Form New Transitional Parliament Under Al-Sharaa
140 Lawmakers to Be Elected, 70 Appointed by President al-Sharaa; Parliament to Lead Reform During Five-Year Interim Period. New Legislative Body Announced Following Assad’s Ouster
Syria, PUREWILAYAH.COM - Syrian authorities announced on Sunday that a new 210-member transitional parliament will be formed in September as part of the ongoing efforts to rebuild the country’s political institutions following the ousting of former President Bashar al-Assad.
The newly structured body will include 140 members elected by local electoral bodies, while 70 seats will be filled through direct appointment by transitional President Ahmad al-Sharaa.
The announcement marks a significant development in Syria’s shift toward a post-conflict political order after nearly 14 years of war that devastated the country.
Temporary Constitution and Transitional Period
Following Assad’s removal in December, the transitional government led by Ahmad al-Sharaa dissolved the previous legislature and adopted a temporary constitutional declaration in March. This declaration established a five-year interim period during which a permanent constitution will be drafted and enacted.
The transitional parliament will have a renewable three-year mandate and exercise full legislative authority until a new constitution is adopted and general elections are held. It is expected to play a central role in constitutional reform, institutional rebuilding, and national reconciliation.
Committee Finalizes Parliamentary Roadmap
According to the state-run SANA news agency, a 10-member committee overseeing the formation of the new legislature has completed its roadmap. Committee chairman Mohammad Taha al-Ahmad met with President al-Sharaa on Saturday to present the plan.
The parliamentary selection process is scheduled for September 15–20. Al-Ahmad explained that local electoral committees will be formed within three weeks of the issuance of the official decree. Once the process begins, candidates will have approximately one week to campaign, present their platforms, and participate in public debates.
He further stressed the importance of gender representation, stating that women would be included in the new parliament.
Al-Sharaa Pledges Inclusive and Representative Governance
In his inaugural address in January, President Ahmad al-Sharaa laid out a vision for Syria’s transitional future, emphasizing national unity and inclusive governance.
“The participation of Syrians in the political process is essential for building their future with freedom and dignity, without exclusion or marginalization,” he declared.
Al-Sharaa pledged the formation of a broad-based transitional government that reflects Syria’s ethnic, sectarian, and generational diversity, with equal representation of men, women, and youth. Rebuilding state institutions and restoring public trust would be central to the government’s mission.
Steps Toward National Dialogue and Legislative Stability
In addition to the formation of the new parliament, al-Sharaa also announced the establishment of a preparatory committee tasked with selecting a small legislative council to address the current political vacuum during the transitional period.
He also unveiled plans for a National Dialogue Conference, which will serve as a platform for consultation and engagement among various sectors of Syrian society, both inside and outside the country.
The transitional leadership aims to foster a participatory political environment that paves the way for long-term peace, stability, and democratic governance in Syria. (PW)
