Syria Denies Reuters Report on U.S. Military Bases
An official source at the ministry described the report as “baseless and inaccurate,” asserting that it misrepresents the current political and military realities in Syria.
Syria, PUREWILAYAH.COM — The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs denied a Reuters report claiming that the United States is preparing to deploy troops at an airbase in Damascus as part of a so-called “security arrangement” involving “Israel.”
An official ministry source described the report as false, misleading, and detached from reality, emphasizing that it misrepresents Syria’s political and military situation.
Speaking to SANA, the official noted that the current period reflects a noticeable evolution in Washington’s position toward Damascus, pointing to increased indications of direct engagement with Syria’s transitional leadership under President Ahmed al-Sharaa.
The source claimed that this shift appears to include a declared U.S. interest in supporting Syria’s unity and rejecting any schemes aimed at division or fragmentation.
He explained that ongoing efforts are focused on restoring state authority over arrangements previously made with temporary entities, within a comprehensive framework of political, military, and economic coordination based on mutual respect and national sovereignty.
Reuters’ Story on “US Security Arrangement”
In its report, Reuters cited six unnamed sources alleging that Washington plans to station U.S. forces in Damascus to finalize a security framework between Syria and “Israel.”
If true, such a move would represent the first-ever U.S. military presence in the Syrian capital — a scenario Reuters described as part of a “dramatic shift” in the country’s geopolitical orientation following the reported fall of former President Bashar al-Assad and the rise of the transitional government.
The report further claimed that the alleged airbase would serve as a strategic point for a proposed “non-aggression zone” in southern Syria, under U.S.–Israeli coordination and with the Trump administration’s supervision.
Russia’s Continued Partnership with Syria
Reuters also claimed that Damascus is renegotiating older military agreements with Moscow, following Russia’s recent resumption of flights to the Hmeimim Air Base in Latakia after a temporary six-month pause.
According to the same report, both sides were “reassessing” the future of Russia’s facilities, including Hmeimim and the Tartus naval port, to fit Syria’s “new political reality.”
However, the Syrian Foreign Ministry made no reference to such talks, instead reaffirming the depth of Damascus’ strategic alliance with Moscow and its independent foreign policy free from Western dictates.
The official Syrian source concluded by rejecting Western disinformation that seeks to legitimize U.S. or Israeli interference under the guise of “security arrangements.”
“Syria remains steadfast in defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the source affirmed, “and is committed to building cooperation on the basis of mutual respect, equality, and full independence in decision-making.” (PW)
