Starmer Aides Resign as Pressure Mounts After Labour’s Crushing Election Defeat
Senior advisers step down and reportedly urge the British prime minister to follow suit as dozens of Labour MPs question his political future.
United Kingdom, PUREWILAYAH.COM — Two senior aides to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer resigned on Monday following Labour Party’s crushing defeat in last week’s local elections, as growing numbers of party lawmakers openly question Starmer’s leadership.
According to the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, Tom Rutland and Joe Morris stepped down from their positions and reportedly urged Starmer to resign as well.
The resignations came after Labour suffered major losses in Thursday’s local elections, a result that has intensified internal dissent and raised fresh doubts over the prime minister’s political future.
Labour Suffers Heavy Losses
Early results showed Labour was dealt a severe setback by the right-wing populist Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage, a leading figure behind Brexit.
According to Reuters, Reform UK captured more than 300 council seats across England and is emerging as a major opposition force in Scotland and Wales.
The scale of the defeat highlighted growing voter dissatisfaction less than a year after Labour returned to power under Starmer.
Starmer Under Intensifying Pressure
Responding to the results, Starmer described the outcome as “painful and very difficult” but said the setback would not weaken his resolve to deliver the change he had promised.
The election losses have nevertheless triggered open calls for his departure.
Around 40 Labour MPs have publicly demanded either Starmer’s resignation or a clear timetable for his exit as party leader. Some lawmakers reportedly accused him of being “completely detached from the political reality of the country.” (PW)
