Slovak PM: US Attack on Venezuela Signals Collapse of Post-WWII World Order
Robert Fico Says Washington’s Use of Force Without UN Mandate Exposes Open Disregard for International Law
Venezuela | PUREWILAYAH.COM — Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has warned that the US military attack on Venezuela is further proof that the post-World War II international order is collapsing, as powerful states increasingly resort to force without legal restraint.
Speaking hours after US forces launched airstrikes on Venezuela and captured President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Fico said the operation demonstrated that international law is no longer being respected by dominant global powers.
“International Law No Longer Applies”
In a statement published on social media, Fico said the US assault showed that the global system established after World War II is rapidly eroding.
“International law does not apply, military force is used without a UN Security Council mandate, and everyone who is big and strong does whatever they want in promoting their own interests,” he stated.
US authorities have since transferred Maduro and his wife to American custody, charging them with drug trafficking conspiracy—allegations Caracas has long rejected as a pretext for regime change and control over Venezuela’s vast oil resources.
Trump Declares US Control Over Venezuela
US President Donald Trump openly confirmed Washington’s intentions following the operation, declaring that the United States would now “run” Venezuela and secure its oil industry.
The statement reinforced accusations that the assault was driven by strategic and economic motives rather than legal or humanitarian concerns.
Fico Condemns Selective Enforcement of Global Norms
Fico said that as the leader of a small country, he rejects what he described as the “subversion of international law,” noting that he had taken similar positions against the US invasion of Iraq, the non-recognition of Kosovo’s sovereignty, the use of Russian military force in Ukraine, and the ongoing situation in Gaza.
He stressed that international law cannot be applied selectively based on political alignment or power.
EU Faces Test of Credibility
The Slovak prime minister questioned how the European Union would respond to the US attack, stating that the operation “deserves condemnation.”
“Either it will condemn the use of US military force in Venezuela and be consistent with its stance on the war in Ukraine, or it will remain, as usual, hypocritically self-righteous,” Fico said.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas called for “restraint” in a brief post on X, urging adherence to the UN Charter without directly condemning Washington’s actions.
Russia and China Condemn US Aggression
Both Russia and China issued strong condemnations of the US attack.
The Russian Foreign Ministry described the strikes and the capture of Maduro as an “unacceptable infringement on the sovereignty of an independent state,” calling on Washington to immediately release the Venezuelan president.
China also denounced the assault as a violation of international law and national sovereignty, warning that such actions further destabilize the global order. (PW)
