Russian Nuclear Submarine Conducts Missile Test in Arctic
In addition to Oniks missiles, Yasen-M submarines are also armed with Kalibr cruise missiles and Tsirkon hypersonic missiles.
Russia, PUREWILAYAH.COM - Russia’s Northern Fleet has released footage showing its Arkhangelsk nuclear submarine carrying out a successful missile test in the Barents Sea in the Arctic.
According to a statement from the fleet on Wednesday, the submarine fired an Oniks cruise missile from an underwater position and struck a target simulating a surface ship at a distance of around 200 kilometers.
The Arkhangelsk is the third submarine in Russia’s Project 885M Yasen-M class, an upgraded version of fourth-generation submarines designed with a reduced acoustic signature, making them increasingly difficult to detect and track by sonar.
In addition to Oniks missiles, Yasen-M submarines are also armed with Kalibr cruise missiles and Tsirkon hypersonic missiles.
The Arkhangelsk has been in service with Russia’s Northern Fleet since December 2024.
During a visit to the submarine last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin described it as “the most modern” and “best-equipped” submarine, capable of carrying out a wide range of missions.
Putin said the Arkhangelsk and other Yasen-M submarines “can do everything,” referring to their ability to strike targets underwater, on the surface, and on land. (PW)
