Russia and China Launch Joint Project to Develop New 16-Ton Heavy Helicopter
The next-generation aircraft combines Chinese design expertise with critical Russian transmission technology, highlighting deepening strategic cooperation between Moscow and Beijing.
Russia, PUREWILAYAH.COM — Russia and China are jointly developing a new-generation heavy helicopter with a payload capacity of 14 to 16 tons, in a major aerospace program that reflects the growing technological and industrial partnership between the two countries.
The project is aimed at producing a modern heavy-lift helicopter tailored to China’s operational requirements and expected to become a significant achievement once it enters the international market.
Viktor Kladov, Director of International Cooperation at Rostec, said the joint program has the potential to become an important milestone in bilateral aerospace cooperation.
The aircraft will fill the gap between the Mil Mi-171, which carries 10 to 12 tons, and the Mil Mi-26, the world’s largest operational helicopter with a payload capacity of 20 tons.
Under the project, Avicopter is leading the overall design, while Rostec is responsible for developing critical components, including the gearbox and power transmission systems.
The program has reportedly passed China’s state evaluation process and is now advancing toward joint production.
The initiative underscores the accelerating strategic partnership between Moscow and Beijing, as both countries expand cooperation in aerospace, defense, and advanced industrial technologies amid increasing Western efforts to contain their technological rise. (PW)
