Putin Arrives in China for Strategic Talks with Xi
The two leaders are expected to discuss the most sensitive issues in bilateral relations, sign around 40 agreements, and expand cooperation in energy, technology, space, and artificial intelligence
Russia, PUREWILAYAH.COM — Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Beijing on Tuesday for a two-day official visit to China at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, in a trip widely seen as a major demonstration of the growing strategic partnership between Moscow and Beijing.
The visit coincides with the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Russia-China Treaty of Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation, a landmark agreement that laid the foundation for one of the most important geopolitical partnerships in the modern world.
Putin’s arrival came less than a week after U.S. President Donald Trump concluded his own two-day visit to Beijing, which ended without any significant breakthroughs on key issues such as Taiwan and Chinese imports of Iranian oil.
The Kremlin rejected any suggestion that the timing of Putin’s trip was linked to Trump’s visit. Kremlin foreign policy aide Yury Ushakov stated that preparations for the summit began shortly after Putin and Xi held a video conference in February.
Upon landing in Beijing, Putin was welcomed by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, accompanied by an honor guard and children waving Russian and Chinese flags.
The Russian delegation includes senior ministers and executives from major state-linked corporations, including Gazprom, Rosatom, and Roscosmos, underscoring the broad economic and strategic scope of the visit.
Strategic Talks and Symbolic Tea Diplomacy
Meetings between Putin and Xi are scheduled for Wednesday and will include both private one-on-one discussions and expanded talks involving senior officials from both sides.
According to Ushakov, the two leaders will address “the most important and sensitive issues” in bilateral relations, as well as major international developments.
A particularly symbolic component of the visit will be an informal tea meeting between the two presidents. Ushakov described the session as one of the most important events of the trip and expressed hope that it would last as long as possible, emphasizing the close personal relationship between the two leaders.
In a video message released ahead of his arrival, Putin described relations with China as having reached a “truly unprecedented level” and referred to Xi as “my longtime good friend.”
Power of Siberia 2 and Expanding Economic Cooperation
A central topic of the talks is expected to be the proposed Power of Siberia 2 pipeline, a major energy project that would significantly expand Russian gas exports to China.
Russian officials reportedly believe that volatility in global energy markets—driven by the ongoing war against Iran and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz—could strengthen Moscow’s position in negotiations over gas pricing and supply terms.
In total, approximately 40 bilateral documents are expected to be signed, including a joint statement on further deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.
Chinese state media, including People’s Daily, described Russia-China relations as being “at the best” point in their history and stressed that growing global instability should encourage both countries to strengthen strategic coordination and comprehensive cooperation.
Cooperation Across Technology, Space, and Artificial Intelligence
Chinese officials have highlighted numerous sectors for expanded collaboration, including agriculture, science, advanced technology, space exploration, and artificial intelligence.
The participation of top executives from Gazprom, Rosatom, and Roscosmos reflects the importance of cooperation not only in energy but also in nuclear technology, aerospace, and high-tech industries.
As both Moscow and Beijing face increasing pressure from the United States and its allies, the summit is expected to reinforce a strategic alignment aimed at accelerating the emergence of a multipolar world order and reducing Western dominance over global affairs. (PW)
