Putin and Xi to Discuss Most Sensitive Strategic Issues During Official Visit to China
The May 19–20 visit to Beijing will feature high-level talks between the two leaders and the signing of nearly 40 agreements covering energy, technology, trade, and global strategic coordination.
Russia, PUREWILAYAH.COM — Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping are set to hold extensive talks in Beijing this week to discuss what the Kremlin has described as the most important and sensitive issues in the strategic partnership between Russia and China.
The two-day visit, scheduled for May 19–20, is expected to deepen coordination between Moscow and Beijing at a time of intensifying global tensions and mounting Western efforts to contain both powers.
According to TASS, Kremlin foreign policy aide Yury Ushakov said the leaders will address the most consequential aspects of bilateral relations during both a one-on-one meeting and broader negotiations involving senior officials, ministers, and business leaders from both countries.
Sensitive Issues at the Core of Talks
Ushakov said President Putin will begin his discussions with Xi immediately after the official welcoming ceremony at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
“This will be a meeting where the two leaders are set to discuss the most important issues, including sensitive matters between our countries,” Ushakov told reporters.
The Russian delegation will include deputy prime ministers, senior members of the presidential administration, federal ministers, and representatives of major Russian corporations, underscoring the comprehensive nature of the talks.
Although the Kremlin did not specify the sensitive issues to be discussed, the agenda is expected to include strategic coordination on global security, economic cooperation, energy, technology, and responses to Western sanctions and geopolitical pressure.
Formal Arrival and Ceremonial Welcome
Putin is scheduled to arrive in Beijing on the evening of May 19, where he will be received personally by Wang Yi, a member of the Communist Party Politburo.
According to Ushakov, the Chinese government will organize a formal reception at the airport featuring children and an honor guard in accordance with longstanding Chinese diplomatic tradition.
Following the airport ceremony, Putin will stay at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, the official residence used to host distinguished foreign leaders.
On the morning of May 20, the visit will formally begin with a state welcoming ceremony at Tiananmen Square at 11:00 a.m. local time.
Putin Addresses the Chinese People
Ahead of his arrival, President Putin recorded a special video message to the Chinese people.
Ushakov said the address replaces the traditional article or interview that Russian presidents customarily provide to local media before major foreign visits.
The move reflects the significance Moscow places on its relationship with Beijing and offers a direct message to the Chinese public regarding the importance of the strategic partnership.
Forty Agreements Ready for Signature
One of the most significant outcomes of the visit will be the signing of approximately 40 bilateral documents.
According to Ushakov, 21 agreements will be signed in the presence of Putin and Xi, while the remainder will be announced during the official signing ceremony.
The agreements cover an extensive range of sectors, including:
Industrial cooperation
Trade and investment
Transportation and logistics
Construction and infrastructure
Innovation and advanced technologies
Education and academic exchange
Cinematography and cultural cooperation
Nuclear energy
Coordination between news agencies
The final list of agreements will be published on the Kremlin’s official website.
Strategic Partnership Expands Under Pressure
The visit comes as Russia and China continue to strengthen coordination in response to escalating pressure from the United States and its allies.
Both countries have significantly expanded cooperation in trade, energy, finance, defense, and diplomatic coordination, presenting an increasingly influential Eurasian partnership that challenges Western dominance over global affairs.
The anticipated agreements are expected to further institutionalize this partnership and reinforce the emergence of a more multipolar international order.
Joint Statement Expected
Following their talks, Putin and Xi are expected to issue a joint statement outlining the next phase of bilateral cooperation and their shared positions on key international issues.
They will also address the media together after the negotiations.
Putin’s visit to Beijing is widely viewed as one of the most consequential diplomatic engagements of the year, signaling the continued consolidation of one of the world’s most important strategic partnerships.
