Pezeshkian at SCO: West’s Military Pressure Fails, Snapback Only Escalates Tensions
Pezeshkian tells SCO summit that US and Israel’s failed attacks prove military options are ineffective, the so-called “snapback mechanism” would only escalate tensions and complicate matters
China, PUREWILAYAH.COM — President Masoud Pezeshkian of the Islamic Republic of Iran has declared that his country remains ready to resolve its peaceful nuclear program through diplomatic means, stressing that the failed military aggression by the United States and Israel in June against Iranian nuclear facilities demonstrated the futility of military action.
Speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Plus Summit in Tianjin, held alongside the SCO Heads of State Summit, Pezeshkian condemned Western double standards, noting that Washington launched attacks even as it sat at the negotiating table with Tehran, and that European threats to reinstate sanctions come despite their own repeated violations of commitments.
Condemnation of Western Hypocrisy and Sanctions Pressure
Pezeshkian recounted that the Iranian people have endured years of sanctions and military threats, yet Iran has consistently acted within its legal rights and sought to clarify concerns through dialogue.
He accused the United States of hypocrisy for engaging in talks while orchestrating aggression, and criticised European governments for threatening to restore sanctions despite their lack of compliance with agreements.
He warned that resorting to the so-called “snapback mechanism” would only escalate tensions and complicate matters. The Iranian president urged Washington and its European allies to abandon “confrontation-based solutions” and instead embrace diplomacy to reach a fair and balanced resolution.
Iran’s Role in Regional Cooperation and Global Governance Reform
Highlighting Iran’s strategic position at the crossroads of East and West, Pezeshkian said the country is ready to strengthen cooperation with Shanghai Cooperation Organization members, particularly in infrastructure, transit routes, new technologies, and artificial intelligence.
He linked Iran’s stability, energy resources, and geographic advantage to China’s Belt and Road Initiative, emphasising Iran’s potential as a critical transportation hub.
Pezeshkian praised the Shanghai Cooperation Organization as a model of cooperation based on equality, mutual respect, and diversity — in stark contrast to post-Cold War unilateralism — and called for deeper engagement with Global South nations.
He expressed Iran’s full support for President Xi Jinping’s Global Governance Initiative, describing it as a significant step toward a more just international order.
Call for Action on Gaza and the Palestinian Cause
Pezeshkian urged the Shanghai Cooperation Organization to adopt a clear and comprehensive strategy for resolving the crisis in West Asia, particularly the genocide and starvation inflicted on the people of Gaza and Palestine.
He called the atrocities “a stain on the history of humanity” and warned that no global peace initiative can succeed without a just resolution to the Palestinian issue.
Iran’s proposed solution, he reaffirmed, is the participation of all original inhabitants of Palestine in free elections to realise their right to self-determination, in accordance with fundamental principles of international law. He stressed that the Palestinian cause is central to justice in the world and a decisive test for governments claiming to uphold human rights. (PW)
