Persian Gulf: A Pillar of Iranian Historical Identity
Iranian Officials Respond to Attempts at Renaming the Strategic Waterway
Tehran, PUREWILAYAH.COM – The Persian Gulf is more than a geographical term; it is deeply woven into the historical identity of the Iranian nation, according to recent statements from Iranian officials. Administration spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani emphasized that efforts to change the name of the Persian Gulf do not provoke the Iranian people, but rather undermine the credibility of those behind such initiatives.
In a message posted on her X account, Mohajerani responded to reports of a U.S. plan to adopt a different name for the Persian Gulf, stating, “The Persian Gulf is not just a geographical name; it is part of the historical identity of the Iranian nation.” She asserted that attempts to alter the name are ultimately fruitless and serve only to discredit those who pursue them.
These remarks came after Western media reported that U.S. President Donald Trump might announce during an upcoming visit to Saudi Arabia that the U.S. will cease using the historical name for the waterway. In response, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi also condemned what he described as a “politically motivated” move, calling it a sign of hostility toward Iran and its people.
Iranian officials maintain that the name “Persian Gulf” is rooted in thousands of years of history and international recognition, and any attempt to change it is seen as an affront to the nation’s heritage and identity. (PW)
