Occupied Palestine – A New York Times analysis has acknowledged what Palestinians and the resistance axis have long maintained: the violence unleashed by Zionist settlers in the West Bank is not the work of rogue extremists, but the product of a deliberate Israeli state apparatus that funds, arms, and shields the perpetrators.
500,000 Settlers, One Systematic Policy
The analysis describes the West Bank as the principal arena of Israeli occupation, where approximately 500,000 illegal settlers have been planted alongside nearly three million Palestinians. In recent years, the Zionist regime has deepened its stranglehold over the territory through relentless settlement expansion, demolition of Palestinian homes, severe movement restrictions, and intensified military operations.
Armed Settlers Are State Actors, Not Rogue Elements
Crucially, the report refuses to categorise armed settler groups as mere outliers. Many of these groups, it notes, operate as regional defence units and rapid-response squads — functionally integrated into the Israeli military’s structure. Financial and military backing from Israeli officials has so thoroughly blurred the line between armed civilian and uniformed soldier that the distinction has, in practical terms, ceased to exist.

The analysis highlights the village of Qusra as a case in point, where settlers have erected barriers around Palestinian homes and imposed a climate of siege on local families. Among those targeted is Louay Abu Rida, a Palestinian-American whose home has been surrounded by settlers. Despite nominal condemnation from Israeli officials and the US ambassador to the occupied territories, the report concludes that such actions could not persist without structural cover from the Israeli government and military.
Netanyahu’s Cabinet: Architects of Dispossession
The report identifies the policies of Benjamin Netanyahu’s government as an accelerant. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has facilitated settlement construction and the demolition of Palestinian homes, while Internal Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has eased Israeli access to weapons — effectively arming the settler population to the teeth.
