Netanyahu Admits Social Media Is Israel’s Key Weapon to Shape Opinion
The Israeli PM told US influencers that platforms like TikTok and X are vital tools for securing Israel’s right-wing support in the United States, as global outrage over Gaza continues to Mount.
Palestina, PUREWILAYAH.COM - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu admitted on Friday that his government views social media as a “weapon” to secure Israel’s right-wing support base in the United States.
Speaking to US influencers at Israel’s Consulate General in New York, in remarks captured on influencer Debra Lea’s account on the platform X, Netanyahu declared:
“Social media is the most important weapon … to secure our base in the US.”
He identified TikTok as “the most important purchase going on right now,” suggesting its control could have major consequences.
He also pointed to X, stating: “We have to talk to Elon (Musk). He’s not an enemy, he’s a friend.”
According to Netanyahu, securing influence over TikTok and X would allow Israel to “get a lot.”
Trump’s Executive Order on TikTok
Netanyahu’s comments came just one day after US President Donald Trump signed an executive order certifying that a deal to shift TikTok’s US operations to an American consortium complies with national security requirements under domestic law.
The consortium will reportedly include Oracle, Michael Dell, Rupert Murdoch, and others.
Oracle’s founder, Larry Ellison—known for his long-standing support of Israel—has raised concerns that control over TikTok’s US operations could be leveraged to benefit the Israeli government.
Growing Isolation Over Gaza War
Netanyahu’s remarks were delivered at a time when Israel faces mounting global condemnation for its genocidal war in Gaza. Since October 2023, nearly 65,600 Palestinians—most of them women and children—have been killed.
At the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, Netanyahu addressed a largely empty hall after many delegations staged walkouts in protest of Israel’s actions in Gaza, now nearing its third year of war. (PW)
