Nearly 10,000 Killed Since HTS Seized Power in Syria
A human rights monitor reports escalating sectarian violence and impunity under the Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham–led regime
Syria, PUREWILAYAH.COM - Since Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), under the leadership of Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, assumed control of Damascus on 8 December 2024, Syria has witnessed a staggering escalation in bloodshed. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), at least 9,889 people—including 7,449 civilians, 396 children, and 541 women—have lost their lives in the ongoing violence.
Reports suggest that accountability remains virtually nonexistent. Fact‑finding efforts into atrocities—such as the mass killing of approximately 1,600 Alawite civilians in the coastal region—have produced outputs inconsistent with documented evidence.
The SOHR attributes the death toll to relentless operations by both local and foreign militant groups aligned with the HTS government. Graphic imagery circulating online depicts HTS-linked militants branding Alawites and Druze as "pigs" and executing them in their homes or on the streets.
Alongside the mounting fatalities, the report highlights a bleak humanitarian picture: over 190,000 people have been displaced in southwestern Syria since the onset of the July sectarian clashes. In parallel, thousands remain detained without charge or trial—many taken during the coastal massacres—with HTS authorities offering no clarity on their whereabouts. (PW)
