More Than 70 Percent of Europeans Want the EU to Distance Itself from the United States
A major German survey reveals deepening European distrust toward Washington amid growing political, military, and strategic divisions across the transatlantic alliance.
Europe, PUREWILAYAH.COM — A new study conducted by the German Bertelsman Foundation has found that 73 percent of European citizens believe the European Union should distance itself from the United States and pursue its own independent path.
The survey also showed that 58 percent of respondents no longer consider the United States a reliable partner for the European Union, reflecting a growing shift in European public opinion amid widening geopolitical tensions and uncertainty surrounding Washington’s global role.
Although NATO remains the backbone of Europe’s defense structure, the findings suggest that a large portion of European society increasingly believes that survival in a multipolar world requires Europe to define its own strategic interests instead of remaining dependent on the United States.
The Guardian: Europe’s Far Right Is Inevitably Distancing Itself from Trump
The Guardian wrote in an analysis that Donald Trump has become a political liability and a damaging burden for Europe’s far-right parties.
According to the report, the victory of Viktor Orbán’s opponents in Hungary’s elections, along with Trump’s controversial conduct and positions, has placed Europe’s far-right movement under serious pressure.
The analysis stated that Trump, under current conditions, has become more of a burden than a political asset for Europe’s far-right and populist parties. His aggressive behavior, unpredictable remarks, and repeated threats against Europe — including imposing heavy trade tariffs, weakening NATO, and proposals such as purchasing Greenland — have pushed these movements into a defensive and difficult position.
The report emphasized that although Orbán’s electoral defeat is an important and symbolic event, it does not mean the complete decline of the far right in Europe.
The movement still holds power in some countries such as Italy, leads opinion polls in France and Austria, and parts of its anti-immigration agenda have already entered mainstream European politics.
However, excessive closeness to Trump has become increasingly costly for these parties in the current climate and has caused European public opinion to view them as more irrational and extreme.
The Guardian concluded that as long as Trump continues his aggressive and unpredictable style, Europe’s far-right parties will be forced to maintain greater distance from him.
Medvedev: Europe and the United States Are More Divided Than Ever
Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council Dmitry Medvedev stated that Europe and the United States are more divided now than at any time in the past century.
He added that Europe used the “special military operation” as a pretext to intensify its anti-Russian stance, despite having no justification for such a level of “intervention in defense of Ukraine.”
According to RIA Novosti, Medvedev further stated that none of the anti-special military operation objectives declared by the European Union have been achieved.
The Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council also said that Germany’s political leadership has now officially declared its goal of imposing a “strategic defeat” on Russia. He described Germany’s policy as a formalized continuation of large-scale revenge following its defeat in World War II.
He stressed that the possible emergence and deployment of nuclear weapons in Germany would also create concern in the United States.
Medvedev added that Germany’s move toward nuclear weapons would give Moscow grounds to use “all possible retaliatory measures.” (PW)
