Millions Converge in Karbala on Arba’een Pilgrimage
An extraordinary display of faith: pilgrims journey on foot toward Imam Hussein’s shrine, supported by a vast network of volunteer services

Karbala, PUREWILAYAH.COM - Millions of Muslims from around the globe have gathered in Karbala, Iraq, to observe Arba’een—the 40th day following the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the revered third Shia Imam and grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.
Pilgrims from myriad nations have made their way on foot to the sacred city, converging upon the Imam Hussein shrine in acts of devotion and remembrance. This annual pilgrimage is regarded as one of the world’s largest religious gatherings.
Thousands of volunteer-run service stations known as “moukebs” line the pilgrimage routes. These provide pilgrims with essential aid—offering free food, water, rest areas, and medical care—highlighting the spirit of generosity and solidarity that characterises this spiritual journey.
Commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussein and his 72 companions at the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD, the Arba’een march stands as a powerful ritual of resistance against oppression and injustice. (PW)
