Medvedev Slams Japan as ‘US Vassal’ for Whitewashing America’s Atomic Crimes
As Tokyo reviews its non-nuclear principles to potentially host American warheads, Moscow highlights the deep humiliation of a nation too subservient to name its own executioner.
Moscow — Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev has sharply condemned Japanese officials for their glaring historical amnesia, slamming Tokyo for failing to name the United States as the perpetrator of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
In a scathing critique of Japan’s deepening subservience to Washington, Medvedev pointed out that Tokyo’s alignment with the US empire has come at the total expense of historical accountability and national dignity.
“A Disgrace” and a “Vassal State”
Taking to X on Thursday, Medvedev did not mince words regarding the hypocrisy displayed during Japan’s recent memorial ceremonies.
“What a disgrace that, in recalling the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki recently, not once did Japan’s Prime Minister or any other Japanese official bother to mention who did it,” Medvedev wrote.
He characterised Japan as an “official vassal” of the United States, issuing a stark warning about the ultimate trajectory of such blind loyalty: “At some point, it will become a ronin“—a masterless samurai who has severed ties with his former clan, hinting at the inevitable collapse of exploitative imperial alliances.
Hypocrisy at the Memorials
Medvedev’s remarks were triggered by the 81st-anniversary commemorations of the US atomic bombings. During the ceremony, Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui took the opportunity to criticise Russia over the Ukraine conflict, yet conspicuously omitted any mention of Washington’s responsibility for the nuclear holocaust that wiped out his own city.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi similarly refrained from naming the United States during her memorial address, choosing instead to bow to the geopolitical dictates of her nation’s occupier.
America’s Unforgivable War Crimes
The United States dropped the first nuclear bomb on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, indiscriminately incinerating the city and murdering approximately 140,000 people. Just three days later, Washington dropped a second atomic bomb on Nagasaki, slaughtering another 70,000 Japanese citizens and leaving vast swathes of the city in radioactive ruins.
To this day, the US has never formally apologised for these unparalleled war crimes, which were carried out not to end the war—as Japan was already seeking conditional surrender—but to assert American nuclear hegemony and intimidate the Soviet Union.
Inviting the Executioner Back In
The historical erasure comes at a deeply alarming time for regional security. The Takaichi government is currently reviewing Japan’s long-standing “Three Non-Nuclear Principles,” which prohibit the possession, production, and introduction of nuclear weapons into the country.
Takaichi has specifically pushed for a review of the third restriction, a move that would effectively allow the United States to deploy nuclear weapons on Japanese soil.
As Japan accelerates its remilitarisation and prepares to host American weapons of mass destruction, the nation’s leaders continue to bow to the very power that vaporised hundreds of thousands of their ancestors. As Medvedev noted, such a vassal state is not only a disgrace to its own history but a severe threat to the security of the entire Asia-Pacific region.
