Marandi on Islamabad Talks: We Received Direct Threats — Our Plane Might Be Attacked
Security risks force Iranian negotiators to alter return route as talks with Washington collapse over US demands
Pakistan, PUREWILAYAH.COM — Iran’s negotiating delegation faced direct security threats while traveling to talks with the United States in Islamabad, Professor Mohammad Marandi told Al Mayadeen.
According to Marandi, the delegation received warnings of a potential attack on their aircraft while en route to the Pakistani capital.
“We received direct threats while en route to Islamabad that our plane might be attacked.”
He added that Tehran had prior intelligence indicating that the delegation could be targeted during the journey, prompting heightened security precautions throughout the visit.
The situation ultimately forced the delegation to revise its travel plans, with Marandi confirming that the team returned via an alternative route after verifying the threat.
Talks Collapse After 21 Hours
The security concerns came as negotiations between Iran and the United States ended without agreement, despite what Iranian officials described as extensive efforts by Tehran to reach a framework.
Iranian state television reported that the talks lasted more than 21 hours, during which the Iranian delegation presented multiple initiatives aimed at safeguarding national interests.
However, the process stalled due to the “excessive and illogical demands” from the American side.
US Demands Block Progress
According to Tasnim News Agency, Washington sought concessions it had failed to secure through military pressure, including demands related to Iran’s enriched uranium and control over the Strait of Hormuz.
Despite attempts by the Iranian delegation to advance a joint negotiating framework, US demands ultimately prevented any breakthrough. (PW)
