Majority of Americans Back Recognition of Palestinian State: Poll
Reuters–Ipsos poll shows sharp divide between U.S. public sentiment and Trump administration policy amid outrage over Israeli crimes in Gaza
United States, PUREWILAYAH.COM - A new Reuters–Ipsos poll has revealed that a majority of Americans — 59% — support U.S. recognition of an independent Palestinian state, signaling a dramatic shift in public opinion amid global outrage over Israel’s ongoing war crimes in Gaza.
The six-day national survey, which concluded on Monday, showed that 80% of Democrats and 41% of Republicans favor official U.S. recognition of Palestinian statehood, while only 33% oppose the move.
The findings highlight a growing disconnect between the American public’s desire for justice and the Washington establishment’s unwavering support for “Israel.”
Shifting Attitudes Within Trump’s Base
The poll also pointed to notable cracks within the Republican base of U.S. President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly aligned himself with the Israeli occupation.
While 53% of Republicans still oppose recognizing Palestine, 41% now support it — an indication that a growing number of conservative Americans are beginning to question the legitimacy of U.S. complicity in Israel’s crimes.
Among Democrats, support for Palestinian sovereignty was overwhelming, with eight in ten backing official recognition. The data suggest that American society is moving faster than its leaders in acknowledging the Palestinian right to self-determination.
International Recognition on the Rise
The shift in U.S. public sentiment comes as a wave of global recognition for Palestine gathers momentum. In recent weeks, Britain, Canada, France, and Australia have formally recognized the State of Palestine — a development driven by the worldwide condemnation of Israel’s genocide in Gaza, which has killed tens of thousands and left entire neighborhoods in ruins.
These recognitions reflect a historic turning point, as more nations reject the impunity long granted to the Israeli regime and its Western backers. The rising international pressure underscores Washington’s growing isolation in defending an apartheid state responsible for systematic massacres and ethnic cleansing.
Americans View Israel’s Gaza Crimes as “Excessive”
The same Reuters–Ipsos survey found that 60% of Americans believe Israel’s military actions in Gaza are excessive, compared to 32% who disagreed.
The figure marks a significant rise in public condemnation of Israeli aggression, suggesting that the realities of the Gaza genocide are breaking through years of media distortion and political censorship.
Despite these sentiments, President Trump’s administration continues to provide political cover and military backing to the Israeli occupation.
Although Trump recently claimed credit for brokering a temporary ceasefire, Israeli forces have repeatedly violated the truce, killing more than 80 Palestinians and blocking humanitarian aid from entering the besieged enclave.
Public Demands Accountability and Real Peace
While 51% of respondents said Trump “deserves significant credit” if the ceasefire holds, analysts note that such views reflect a broader desire for genuine peace — not blind loyalty.
Even among Democrats who oppose Trump’s policies, one in four said he should be acknowledged if peace were achieved, underscoring the American public’s fatigue with endless war and its appetite for accountability on all sides.
Trump’s foreign policy approval rating, according to the poll, rose modestly to 38% — its highest since July — though it remains far below levels of confidence seen in past administrations.
The online survey, conducted among 4,385 adults nationwide, carries a margin of error of ±2 percentage points.
The Road Ahead: Justice Beyond Politics
As Israel’s crimes in Gaza continue to shock the world, the latest U.S. poll reveals a moral awakening among ordinary Americans — one that contrasts starkly with the political establishment’s entrenched allegiance to Tel Aviv.
The growing support for Palestinian statehood, both at home and abroad, marks a shift toward global justice and a challenge to decades of American complicity in oppression.
Whether Washington’s leaders choose to heed that call remains to be seen — but the will of the people is becoming unmistakably clear. (PW)
