Mahmoud Abbas Draws Fierce Backlash for Insulting Palestinian Resistance
Palestinian resistance groups, families of prisoners and martyrs, and social media users condemn Abbas' remarks as a betrayal of Palestinian sacrifices and unity
Palestine, PUREWILAYAH.COM - Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas' remarks during the Central Council meetings sparked widespread criticism from Palestinian Resistance Alliance forces, as well as from groups representing the families of prisoners and martyrs, who deemed his statements as “direct insults to the resistance” and a “stab in the back of Palestinian sacrifices.”
Resistance Alliance Forces Reject Abbas' Speech
In a statement released by the Palestinian Resistance Alliance forces, they strongly rejected what they described as “inciting rhetoric,” which included a “direct attack on resistance factions.” The statement emphasized that Abbas' words reflected “the leadership’s detachment from the reality of our people and their rooted struggles.”
The Central Council’s Legitimacy Questioned
The statement also clarified that the Central Council “does not represent the Palestinian people’s will in its current form” and that its convening aimed to institutionalize “political inheritance and re-establish a leadership that has lost its legitimacy.”
The resistance forces accused President Abbas of attempting to “weaken the national position in favor of the occupation,” calling on him to “end his political career with a dignified national stance that restores the unity of our people and their institutions.”
Meeting in Ramallah Without Key Palestinian Factions
The meeting was held in Ramallah, without the invitation of Hamas and Islamic Jihad, and with a boycott from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and the Palestinian National Initiative. The participation was limited to the Fatah movement and smaller factions with little presence among the Palestinian street.
Families of Prisoners' Reactions
On their part, the Families of the Brave Prisoners’ Gathering expressed their strong disapproval of Abbas’ remarks, particularly regarding the issue of prisoners and resistance fighters who hold Israeli soldiers. The group’s statement read: “President Abbas described the resistance heroes with offensive terms and ignored the suffering of over ten thousand Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.”
The group questioned why the leadership neglected the prisoners’ cause, criticizing what they saw as “bias in favor of the occupation at the expense of Palestinian sacrifices.” The statement added: “Our prisoners are a crown on our heads, and those who work for them are the noblest. Those who attack them are despicable and vile.”
Martyrs’ Families Respond to Abbas' Insults
Similarly, the Martyrs’ Families Gathering condemned Abbas’ speech, considering it a “stab in the back of the martyrs’ sacrifices,” especially in light of the ongoing aggression on the Gaza Strip for over 564 days. The statement said: “The president referred to the martyrs as ‘killers,’ a description we categorically reject as it belittles the blood of those who gave their lives for the homeland.”
The gathering reaffirmed its commitment to the path of resistance and rejected any attempts to undermine the dignity of the martyrs or abandon the rights of the Palestinian people, calling the speech a “political and moral collapse.”
Abbas’ Remarks Condemned on Social Media
Abbas' remarks, which included direct insults towards resistance factions, were also widely condemned by Palestinian bloggers on social media.
They criticized the absence of Abbas and his government’s failure to play a meaningful role in halting the genocide in Gaza and the ethnic cleansing in the West Bank since October 7, 2023.
The International Implications of Abbas' Statements
Abbas' statements have raised concerns about the future of Palestinian leadership and their impact on international solidarity with Palestine. Observers fear that his remarks may further isolate the Palestinian cause and weaken efforts to secure global support for Palestinian rights and liberation.
Continued Struggle for Palestinian Unity
In the face of growing divisions, Palestinian factions and communities continue to call for unity in the struggle against Israeli occupation and oppression.
Despite internal disagreements, the broader Palestinian resistance remains committed to its cause, emphasizing the importance of solidarity and resilience in the fight for justice. (PW)
