Moscow — Russian President Vladimir Putin conveyed Iran’s strategic vision for resolving the ongoing war to US President Donald Trump during a high-stakes telephone conversation, the Kremlin confirmed on Saturday.
According to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, the diplomatic manoeuvre was closely coordinated with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
The outreach follows a series of high-level meetings between Putin and Pezeshkian in Turkmenistan. The two leaders met twice on the sidelines of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) summit and the Caspian Environmental Summit. During one of those bilateral sessions, Putin reportedly informed his Iranian counterpart about the impending call with the US President. The regional gatherings also featured trilateral talks involving Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
While the Kremlin remained tight-lipped regarding the specific details of Tehran’s proposals or Washington’s immediate response to them, President Trump took to Truth Social to describe the October 9 conversation as “highly successful.”
In a social media post, Trump pivoted to announce a massive energy agreement, claiming Russia would immediately begin supplying over 300,000 tons of diesel fuel to the American and global markets, with millions of additional tons to follow in the coming months. Trump asserted that this influx of Russian energy, coupled with American “total control” of the Strait of Hormuz, would rapidly drive down diesel prices globally.
Concluding his statement, the US President reiterated a hardline stance on regional security, emphatically declaring that “Iran will not have a nuclear weapon,” though he did not explicitly detail how Tehran’s peace proposals factored into the energy agreements or broader geopolitical concessions.
