Israeli Forces Target UNIFIL Unit in New Violation of Lebanese Sovereignty
Glider Drops Sonic Bomb on Residents, Merkava Tank Fires Near UN Peacekeepers in South Lebanon
Lebanon, PUREWILAYAH.COM — Israeli forces carried out multiple attacks in South Lebanon, striking both civilians and UN peacekeepers in a series of new violations of Lebanese sovereignty and UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
According to a report from Al-Manar, an Israeli glider dropped a sonic bomb on a group of residents visiting the border town of Al-Dhahira.
In a separate incident, Israeli artillery shelled a UNIFIL infantry unit at around 6:30 AM in the Sarda area, located south of Al-Khiyam, South Lebanon.
The attacks were reportedly launched from a new Israeli military position built inside Lebanese territory on Hammamṣ Hill, highlighting a continuing expansion of Israel’s illegal activities beyond the border.
UNIFIL Confirms Israeli Merkava Tank Fired at Peacekeepers
In an official statement, UNIFIL confirmed that an Israeli Merkava tank opened fire near a UN observation site inside Lebanese territory.
Heavy machine-gun rounds landed approximately five meters from a group of UN peacekeepers patrolling the area, forcing them to take cover to avoid injury.
UNIFIL described the incident as a serious threat to the safety of its personnel.
Violation of UNSC Resolution 1701
The latest aggression constitutes a fresh breach of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which governs the presence and operations of UNIFIL in southern Lebanon and obligates Israel to halt all hostile actions within Lebanese territory.
Lebanon has repeatedly warned that Israel’s continued violations—whether through artillery fire, aerial incursions, or direct targeting of civilians and UN forces—pose a grave risk to regional stability. (PW)
