Israeli Forces Kill Another Palestinian Journalist Amid Outcry Over Media Deaths
Fatal shooting follows devastating airstrike on Gaza hospital that killed five journalists, prompting renewed calls for accountability

Khan Younis, PUREWILAYAH.COM — In a harrowing escalation, Israeli forces shot and killed Hassan Douhan, a journalist and academic affiliated with al-Hayat al-Jadida, just hours after he had publicly mourned five colleagues slain in an earlier airstrike on Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis. His death brings the total number of journalistic casualties in Gaza this Monday to six.
According to Gaza’s government media office, the latest fatalities push the number of media workers killed since the onset of Israel’s offensive in October 2023 to 246.
In his final Facebook post, Douhan paid tribute to the journalists killed at Nasser Hospital, calling them "martyrs of righteousness and conveying the truth, the word and the picture" and honouring them as "martyrs of national duty and journalism."
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) strongly condemned the hospital strike and Douhan's killing, urging the international community to hold Israel accountable for what it termed “continued unlawful attacks on the press.” CPJ’s Regional Director Sara Qudah said: “These murders must end now. The perpetrators must no longer be allowed to act with impunity.”
The United Nations rights office echoed the call for justice, declaring that the killing of journalists and the targeting of hospitals should prompt action—not silence.
A spokesperson emphasised: “Journalists are not a target. Hospitals are not a target.”
Why It Matters
Rising Threats to Journalists: This incident compounds a growing pattern of violence against media professionals in Gaza, underscoring the extreme dangers they face while documenting the conflict.
Amplifying Global Appeals: With both CPJ and UN voices condemning the attacks, this killing intensifies global pressure for accountability and protection for journalists.
Shrinking Space for Reporting: Douhan’s death, occurring mere hours after he paid tribute to his fallen peers, highlights the narrowing room for reporting and remembrance in Gaza. (PW)
