Iraqi Resistance Warns of Ending US Occupation Over Broken Commitments
Groups cite political interference, repeated airspace violations, and failure to withdraw US forces from Iraq
Iraq | PUREWILAYAH.COM — Iraqi resistance factions have warned that they reserve the legitimate right to end what they describe as the US occupation of Iraq if Washington continues imposing its will and maintaining military forces on Iraqi territory.
In a statement reported by Al Jazeera, the Coordination of Iraqi Resistance said the United States has failed to honor its commitments toward Iraq and continues to undermine the country’s sovereignty, security, and political independence.
Unequal Relations and Political Interference
The statement said relations between Baghdad and Washington are not based on equality between sovereign states. It accused the United States of ongoing interference in Iraq’s internal affairs, including determining which political figures may assume government positions and which must be excluded, based on what it described as American political will.
According to the resistance coordination, such actions constitute direct interference in Iraq’s domestic political process and violate the principles of national sovereignty.
Airspace Violations and Failure to Implement Withdrawal Agreement
The statement said US forces repeatedly violate Iraqi airspace through the use of drones and fighter jets, describing these incursions as a serious security threat to Iraq’s stability and territorial integrity.
The resistance groups said such actions constitute a clear assault on Iraqi sovereignty and an affront to the dignity of the Iraqi state.
The Coordination of Iraqi Resistance stated that Washington has not fulfilled its obligations under the agreement with the Iraqi government to remove all foreign forces from the country.
It added that no tangible or practical steps have been observed toward completing the withdrawal of US forces from Iraqi land and airspace, despite repeated commitments and assurances.
Right to End the Occupation
The statement warned that continued evasion and delay by the United States would leave the Iraqi resistance with no option but to assume its legal and moral responsibilities.
It said the resistance would take positions deemed appropriate to the dignity of the Iraqi people and their legitimate right to end the occupation if Washington insists on maintaining its presence and imposing its will on the country.
The statement follows remarks made on January 27 by Donald Trump, who threatened to cut support for Baghdad if Nouri al-Maliki were to return as prime minister. Trump at the time said Iraq would be making a “big mistake” by reinstating al-Maliki.
Al-Maliki previously described US demands to exclude him from the premiership as blatant interference in Iraq’s internal affairs, a position echoed by Iraq’s presidency and several political forces that rejected what they called American meddling. (PW)
