Iraq Foils ISIS-Linked Terror Plot Ahead of Arba’een Pilgrimage
22 Suspects Arrested in Covert Operation to Prevent Bombings and Poisoning Along Pilgrim Routes
Iraq, PUREWILAYAH.COM - In a decisive security operation carried out under the direct supervision of the Karbala Investigation Court, Iraqi authorities dismantled a terror cell planning multiple attacks on Arba’een pilgrims, announcing the arrests of 22 individuals tied to the ISIS militant group.
Governor Nassif Jassim al‑Khattabi revealed during a press briefing that those detained had confessed their affiliation with Daesh. Their intended attacks included planting roadside explosives along pilgrimage routes, targeting security forces and Hussaini processions, and even poisoning gathering areas frequented by pilgrims.
The foiled plot also involved targeting a key Husseiniya (religious congregation hall) along the road connecting Karbala and Najaf. Al‑Khattabi noted that some of the terrorists had contacts with foreign actors, including an operative with direct ties to Israeli networks.
Praising the coordination between intelligence and judicial authorities, the governor stressed that security measures remain in place to ensure pilgrims’ safety during the Arba’een commemorations—a major event that draws millions of worshippers from around the globe. (PW)
