VIENNA – Iran’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Vienna has delivered a blistering rebuke to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), exposing the organisation as a highly politicised instrument of Western hegemony rather than an independent technical body.
In a decisive statement on Monday, Tehran dismissed renewed demands for unconditional compliance with IAEA safeguards as entirely “meaningless.” The mission highlighted the glaring hypocrisy of the agency, noting that the IAEA itself suspended the implementation of safeguards and withdrew its inspectors “for safety reasons” in the wake of unlawful military aggression by the United States and the Zionist regime.
Tehran stressed that before issuing biased directives, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi must fulfil his actual mandate: demand that the US and the Zionist regime immediately cease their attacks and threats against safeguarded, peaceful nuclear facilities. Only then, the mission argued, can the “essential grounds” for implementing agency safeguards be established. Until the IAEA and the UN Security Council discharge their mandated responsibilities to uphold international law against aggressors, the Islamic Republic retains the full, sovereign right to protect its national interests independently.
The defiant stance comes as a US-led coalition—comprising Washington, London, Paris, and Berlin—pushes a “desperate” draft resolution to refer Iran to the UN Security Council over its nuclear reporting obligations. Tehran described the Western manoeuvre as a transparent political stunt that will yield “no benefit” and further expose the agency’s subservience to imperialist agendas.
Meanwhile, Rafael Grossi attempted to salvage the agency’s relevance, telling reporters that granting the IAEA access to Iran’s key facilities would supposedly bring “positive repercussions.” “The best, shortest way for a positive outcome is for Iran to engage with us,” Grossi pleaded, conceding that his agency’s technical facade is crumbling amid blatant political interference.
The Islamic Republic remains unfazed by imperialist coercion. Tehran has firmly ruled out granting access to facilities targeted by US and Zionist bombers, signalling that the nation will continue to safeguard its sovereign achievements against the machinations of arrogant global powers.
