Iran Warns UN: Any US Attack Will Be Met with Decisive Response
Tehran says all hostile bases and assets in the region would become legitimate targets, holding the United States fully responsible for all consequences
Iran | PUREWILAYAH.COM — Iran has warned that it will respond decisively and proportionately to any military aggression, declaring that all bases, facilities, and assets of hostile forces in the region would be considered legitimate targets under its inherent right of self-defense.
In a formal letter addressed to the United Nations Secretary-General and the President of the UN Security Council, Iran’s Permanent Representative cautioned against what he described as ongoing American threats to use force against the Islamic Republic.
Iran Holds United States Responsible for Any Consequences
The Iranian envoy stated that the United States would bear full and direct responsibility for any unpredictable and uncontrollable consequences arising from military aggression.
“If the Islamic Republic of Iran is subjected to military attack, it will respond decisively. In such a scenario, all bases, facilities, and assets of the hostile force in the region shall be regarded as legitimate targets within the framework of Iran’s defensive response,” the letter said.
The envoy stressed that Iran is not seeking war and will not initiate conflict, but warned that any act of aggression would be met with a firm response.
Warning over Explicit US Threats and Diego Garcia
The letter recalled previous communications sent on December 30, 2025, and January 2, 9, 13, 22, and 28, 2026, concerning repeated US threats to resort to force against Iran.
It specifically cited recent public remarks by the President of the United States, who openly referred to the possible use of the Diego Garcia military base and the Fairford airbase for a potential attack on Iran.
According to the letter, such statements constitute a blatant violation of the UN Charter and international law, posing a serious risk of plunging the region into a new cycle of crisis and instability.
Iran Rejects ‘War Rhetoric’ as Mere Posturing
Iran’s representative emphasized that, given the fragile and volatile regional environment and the continued deployment and movement of US military assets, such statements cannot be dismissed as rhetorical.
“These war-mongering remarks point to a real and credible risk of military aggression, the consequences of which would be catastrophic for the region and pose a grave threat to international peace and security,” the letter warned.
The envoy noted that Iran has engaged seriously and constructively in nuclear talks with the United States, aiming to transparently convey its concerns and to seek the full, effective, and verifiable removal of illegal and inhumane unilateral coercive measures imposed on the Iranian people.
Iran, he added, has acted on the basis of reciprocity to address and resolve ambiguities related to its peaceful nuclear program, seeking a result-oriented solution fully consistent with the inalienable rights of all states under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
Call for UN Action to Prevent Escalation
The letter urged the UN Secretary-General and all members of the Security Council to exercise their responsibilities under the UN Charter to maintain international peace and security.
Iran called on the council to compel the United States to immediately cease its illegal threats of force, adhere to its obligations under the UN Charter—particularly Article 2(4)—and refrain from actions that could further escalate tensions or lead to military confrontation.
The envoy warned that failure to act would normalize threats of aggression as a tool of foreign policy, setting a dangerous precedent that could soon endanger another independent UN member state.
Iran Asserts Right to Self-Defense under Article 51
The letter concluded by reiterating Iran’s longstanding position: the Islamic Republic neither seeks tension nor desires war, and it will not initiate conflict.
However, it stressed that if Iran is subjected to military aggression, it will exercise its inherent right of self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter, responding decisively and proportionately.
“In such circumstances,” the letter stated, “all bases, facilities, and assets of the hostile force in the region will constitute legitimate targets, and the United States will bear full and direct responsibility for any unpredictable and uncontrolled consequences.” (PW)
