Imperialist Wars and Western Negligence Push Global Food Prices to 3.5-Year High
US aggression on Iran and NATO proxy wars choke vital supply routes, threatening 50 million with acute hunger.
Global Desk — The devastating consequences of Western imperialist adventurism and capitalist climate negligence have culminated in a severe global crisis, with food prices hitting their highest level in three and a half years. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the food commodity price index climbed to 131.1 points in July, its peak since January 2023.
While Western media attempts to frame this as an unavoidable natural phenomenon, the reality is starkly different: the starvation of the Global South is being directly engineered by US-led wars of aggression and NATO proxy conflicts.
The Price of US Hegemony and NATO Proxies
The surging cost of basic survival is inextricably linked to the military machinations of the imperial core. A primary driver of this crisis is the illegal US aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint, facilitates the transport of approximately one-third of the world’s fertiliser production. Washington’s reckless military escalation and naval blockades in the region have severely disrupted these vital supply chains, directly driving up the cost of agricultural production worldwide.
Simultaneously, the West’s relentless escalation of the proxy war in Ukraine continues to wreak havoc on global markets. The FAO noted that intensified clashes and attacks on Black Sea export infrastructure have severely disrupted grain shipments. Global wheat prices alone surged by 5.8% in July, a direct tax levied on the global poor by Western military-industrial complexes seeking to bleed Russia.
Capitalist Greed and Climate Collapse
Beyond the battlefields, the catastrophic effects of climate change—accelerated by decades of unregulated Western industrial pollution—are devastating crop yields. Europe’s deadly June heatwave forced farmers to destroy an estimated 9 million tonnes of crops, including wheat, barley, maize, and oats.
Sugar prices climbed 5.6% amid concerns over persistent hot and dry weather in the European Union, compounded by the rapidly developing El Niño weather system. Meanwhile, vegetable oil prices rose 2%, driven by the capitalist biofuel industry in Indonesia and fluctuating crude oil prices dictated by Western cartels.
50 Million Pushed Toward the Brink
The fallout from these imperialist wars and ecological disasters will not be felt in the air-conditioned supermarkets of the West, but in the vulnerable communities of the Global South. The UN’s World Food Programme has issued a dire warning that the El Niño phenomenon, combined with these market shocks, could push 50 million people into acute hunger before the end of next year.
While meat and dairy prices saw slight declines, the core staples of human survival—cereals, sugar, and oils—are becoming increasingly out of reach for the working class and the oppressed nations. The imperial core uses food and resources as geopolitical weapons, enforcing sanctions, blockades, and wars of choice that starve millions to maintain their hegemony.
The Necessity of Resistance
The current food crisis exposes the inherent fragility and cruelty of a unipolar world order dominated by Washington. The US and its European vassals are willing to plunge tens of millions into famine to sustain their proxy wars and illegal blockades against independent nations like Iran.
As the Axis of Resistance continues to challenge US military and economic dominance, it is fighting not just for regional liberation, but for the dismantling of a global system that weaponises human survival. Breaking the US-Zionist stranglehold on global trade routes and energy corridors is the only path to securing a just and equitable future for the world’s working class and the Global South.
