GLOBAL — In a significant show of international solidarity, more than 20 prominent Hollywood actors, including several Marvel Cinematic Universe stars, have thrown their weight behind a global campaign demanding the immediate release of imprisoned Palestinian resistance leader Marwan Barghouti.
The actors have added their names to a powerful statement urging the United Nations and world governments to actively press for Barghouti’s freedom from the Israeli occupation’s prisons.
The statement, circulated by the “Free Marwan” campaign launched by Barghouti’s family and supporters, expresses “grave concern at the continuing imprisonment of Marwan Barghouti, his violent mistreatment and denial of legal rights whilst imprisoned.”
“We call upon the United Nations and the Governments of the World to actively seek the release of Marwan Barghouti from Israeli prison,” the declaration reads.
Marvel Stars and Cultural Giants Join the Call
The list of signatories includes major Hollywood figures such as Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Mark Ruffalo (the Hulk), and Don Cheadle (War Machine). They are joined by other actors with Marvel ties, including Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton, Daniel Bruhl, Rebecca Hall, Zawe Ashton, Tatiana Maslany, May Calamawy, Emma Corrin, and Kingsley Ben-Adir.
The campaign has also garnered the backing of legendary actors like Ian McKellen, Brian Cox, Riz Ahmed, Elliot Page, and Hugo Weaving.
This wave of support from the film industry is part of a broader movement that has attracted more than 200 prominent figures across film, music, literature, and culture. Previous supporters include literary giants Margaret Atwood and Nobel laureate Annie Ernaux, as well as music icons Sting, Paul Simon, Annie Lennox, and Brian Eno. Actor Stephen Fry and businessman Richard Branson have also voiced their support.
Musician Brian Eno, a vocal advocate for Palestinian rights, previously likened the global push for Barghouti’s freedom to the historic international campaign that helped dismantle apartheid in South Africa.
“History shows us that cultural voices can shift the course of politics,” Eno stated. “Just as global solidarity helped free Nelson Mandela, we all have the power to accelerate the day that Marwan Barghouti walks free.”
The Mandela of Palestine
Barghouti, 67, remains one of the most unifying and revered figures in Palestinian politics and the broader resistance movement against the Zionist entity. A senior leader of the Fatah movement, he was abducted by Israeli occupation forces in 2002 during the Second Intifada.
In 2004, an illegitimate Israeli military court sentenced him to five life terms and an additional 40 years in prison based on politically motivated charges. Barghouti vehemently denied the charges and famously refused to recognise the legitimacy of the occupying regime’s court, using his trial as a platform to expose the crimes of the occupation.
Despite enduring more than two decades in Zionist dungeons, Barghouti’s popularity among the Palestinian masses has only grown. He consistently dominates opinion polls as the most viable and unifying candidate for future Palestinian leadership. His supporters and international advocates frequently draw parallels between Barghouti and the late South African anti-apartheid revolutionary Nelson Mandela, viewing him as the only figure capable of bridging deep political divisions among Palestinian factions.
Defiance Behind Bars
The Zionist regime has repeatedly subjected Barghouti to violence, solitary confinement, and severe mistreatment. Yet, his resistance has remained unbroken.
During his incarceration, Barghouti managed to secretly author a 255-page manuscript detailing his experiences and the systemic abuses within Israeli prisons. The book was smuggled out page-by-page by his lawyers and family members and published in 2011.
Continuing his intellectual defiance, Barghouti is set to release a new collection of his writings later this year. Titled Unbroken: In Pursuit of Freedom for Palestine and published by Penguin, the book is scheduled for release on November 5 and will feature an introduction by his wife, Fadwa Barghouti, who has been a tireless campaigner for his release and the rights of Palestinian political prisoners.
As the Zionist regime continues its genocidal onslaught and mass detention campaigns across the West Bank and Gaza, the growing international pressure for Barghouti’s release highlights the regime’s increasing isolation on the global stage.
