Hamdan: Recognition of a Palestinian State Is a Right Step, But Not Enough
Senior Hamas official says international recognition reflects the fruit of resistance, but urges concrete action to stop Israeli aggression and protect civilians.
Palestine, PUREWILAYAH.COM — In a televised interview with Al Mayadeen on Tuesday, senior Hamas official Osama Hamdan welcomed recent international recognitions of Palestinian statehood, describing them as “a step in the right direction” and the political outcome of Palestinian resistance since the launch of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood on October 7, 2023.
Hamdan emphasized, however, that recognition alone is insufficient. He called for tangible measures to halt the killing in Gaza, ensure relief for civilians, and impose sanctions on the Israeli occupation rather than placing dictates on Palestinians.
Recognition Must Be Matched with Action
Hamdan underscored that genuine support for Palestine cannot be reduced to symbolic recognition or outside-imposed compromises.
“What matters now are practical steps that begin with ending the aggression against Gaza,” he said. “International players should direct their pressure at the occupation rather than dictating choices to the Palestinian people.”
He warned that some governments are attempting to escape the responsibility of sanctioning “Israel” by confining themselves to symbolic acts of recognition.
No Messages to Trump After Qatar Strike
Addressing the recent Israeli strike in Qatar — an assassination attempt on Hamas leadership — Hamdan confirmed that the movement has sent no messages to US President Donald Trump or other leaders in its aftermath.
He described the attack as proof that the Israeli occupation “recognises no limits or sovereign borders,” adding that it reinforced Hamas’ conviction that Tel Aviv is willing to violate regional sovereignty.
Hamdan also dismissed new Israeli proposals and indirect talks as tactics aimed at masking ongoing violence in Gaza. He insisted that “Israel” is not interested in a genuine ceasefire, but seeks to buy time for political gains it has failed to achieve after two years of warfare.
Resistance Will Not Concede
Hamdan rejected any suggestion that Hamas would make concessions under pressure. He cautioned against portraying the Resistance as weakened, stressing that such narratives are mistaken and overlook the resilience of Palestinian fighters and the broader support of the people.
Solidarity and Coordination with Lebanese Resistance
The Hamas official underlined the deep coordination between the Palestinian Resistance and the Lebanese Resistance, particularly Hezbollah.
He praised the late Hezbollah Secretary-General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, describing him as a martyr whose legacy continues to strengthen the Axis of Resistance.
Hamdan said this coordination focuses on three central issues: opposing Israeli occupation, preserving Arab unity, and ensuring Palestine remains the strategic centerpiece of the region.
He hinted at “achievements not yet publicly disclosed,” adding that the appropriate time for their revelation will come.
Egypt and Regional Dynamics
On Egypt’s role, Hamdan praised Cairo for rejecting any plans of mass displacement from Gaza. He argued that Israeli hostility toward Egypt is rooted in Cairo’s opposition to forced transfer.
“The threat is no longer limited to deportation of Palestinians; it aims to impose its will on neighboring states,” Hamdan warned, urging regional actors to take Israeli ambitions seriously. (PW)
