QOM — In a profound ethics lesson centred on the Makarim al-Akhlaq supplication of Imam Sajjad (AS), prominent Marja Grand Ayatollah Jafar Sobhani highlighted how the true greatness of Allah in a believer’s heart renders them completely immune to the threats of arrogant powers.
Addressing the spiritual mechanics of resistance, Ayatollah Sobhani stated, “One in whose sight God is great does not waver or tremble before worldly threats and the apparent power of enemies.” He explained that when divine greatness fills the soul of the God-conscious, the psychological warfare and intimidation tactics employed by global oppressors are utterly neutralised.
To illustrate this unbreakable resolve rooted in Wilayah, the Grand Ayatollah recounted a powerful historical precedent from the oppressive Marwanid era. The tyrannical governor Ziyad ibn Abih summoned a devout companion of Amir al-Mu’minin, Imam Ali (AS), with the intention of executing him. Unflinching in the face of imminent death, the companion calmly told the oppressor that his Master had already prophesied his martyrdom—foretelling that his hands and feet would be severed and he would be hanged.
Attempting to reassert dominance, Ziyad vowed to carry out the exact gruesome execution described. However, Ayatollah Sobhani pointed out that the companion’s fearless declaration stripped the executioner of his psychological power. The ability to calmly declare one’s divine fate to a tyrant is the ultimate proof that a believer’s heart fears none but Allah.
Achieving this elevated rank of absolute certainty, the Marja noted, requires immense spiritual discipline. He emphasised that believers must engage in the purification of the soul, dedicate themselves to night worship, endure hardships, and renounce certain carnal desires and worldly pleasures to prepare the ground for true faith.
Concluding his lesson, Ayatollah Sobhani prayed for the Ummah to be granted a faith that transcends mere verbal claims. True faith, he reminded the faithful, must penetrate the deepest depths of the soul, dictating one’s behaviour and empowering the faithful to stand firm against the enemies of Islam.
